Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!
One of the ladies that I work with knows this set of twins name "Orangejello" and "Lemonjello". One of the dads of a baby born at our hospital thought we named his daugher for him "female" he pronounced it to rhyme with tamale (the mexican dish)! We didn't name his daughter for him, but maybe we should have. One lady name her son Brock Lee, until we asked her if she was sure, it sounded like Brocolli when you said both names together, she changed his middle name immediatly.
I worked in OB for many years--we used to keep a running list. The name that sticks in my memory is 'Windy Boy' (that poor kid is surely the butt of endless jokes--)
I don't know if I mentioned this one earlier. My ex-boyfriend from high school was namedShawn Johnathan
OK abusive ex's parent's give your kid 2 versions of the same name...
How is "Shawn Jonathan" two versions of the same name?
I once worked (not in healthcare) with a woman who had three daughters, two of whom were named Teri and Teresa. They weren't twins, either.
I knew twins named Kristy and Chrissy. So much for individuality.

I've known two pairs of twins named Rodney and Ronnie. One set was identical and the other wasn't.

Shawn or Sean is the Irish form of John. So basically it's the same name. Think of how close Shawn and John sound.
Ok the best one i can think of at the moment is abcde...
also have a OB/GYN that named his kid Spider....cute kid though
On an adoption website there are twin boys named Smith and Weston. I kept looking at the names trying to figure out why they sounded so familiar. I'm a little slow so it took me a minute but then I got it. No wonder they are in foster care...parent's tastes are obviously not of the traditional variety...
Another mother of twins who was going to name her boys Jon and Jonathan...
Seen it! I actually didn't think it was that strange. Not something I would do personally, but I've seen it before in different versions. Katy and Kaitlin, Matt and Matthew, Chris and Christian. I thought it was pretty normal since I have seen it over and over again. Frequent a parenting website or two, check out the siggies and you'll be surprised at the trends you'll see. I had no idea the names Virginia and Ava were so popular.

The old-fashioned names are really coming back, especially for girls. Lola, which was my grandmother's name, is quite popular, and so is Ella. I recently saw a patient on the med/surg floor named Ella, and assumed she was a LOL (as in little old lady) since she wasn't on peds, but no, she was 29. I've also encountered Dorothy (the name of Grandma Lola's youngest sister!) twice in recent months.
I recently saw a display of cups with names on them, designed for young kids, and yes, they had Henry, Ava, Otis, and Ella. Good luck trying to find whatever spelling of "Caitlin", however. OTOH, a retired high school teacher I know said that the name he saw that was spelled the most ways was not that, or my first guess which was "Cheryl", but "Alice." Really.
I know a woman named Jennifer who's about 80 years old, and for over 30 years, people have asked her if she's Jennifer's mother.
