hi everyone, i'm a canadian nursing student thats going to grad with bsn in march. i'm planning on moving to tx preferably to the metro houston area. the more that i have been reading this site it kind of scares me that there are not any real jobs in this area let alone jobs for new grads. i am wondering of all of you that are in the houston area find that jobs are becoming harder to get or if there are jobs out there. i have looked at hospital web sites for jobs and there seems to be some available .... few though with little experience though (not that that will detour me :) ). is it also true that most of the nurses from hurricane katrina have relocated to this area making it harder to find a job.

thanks danielle

Texas is a huge state with other major cities that offer many job opportunities, so I wouldn't narrow my focus on just 1 city. Look at all of the major cities before making a decision. I would still move to Texas.

In Texas there's Houston, Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, El Paso, Waco, and other cities. The salaries vary from place to place, as does the overall cost of living. Dallas and El Paso tend to offer good starting salaries, as does Houston. San Antonio and Austin are charming cities, but San Antonio has the lower cost of living of the two.

thanks for the reply. the only reason that i narrowed it down to houston is because i have family living there and if i am going to relocate (with my daughter) i'd rather be near some people that i know.

yeah, that's a valid reason to narrow it down to houston. :)

I can't speak for Houston, but in the DFW area, all the senior BSN students I know already have jobs lined for when they graduate.

Yes, it is true that Houston has a limited amount of nursing jobs with no prior experience. I attended a job fair for nurses and they were turning away entry level nurses. I would go for the temp agencies or recruiters. I think to land a job in houston as a nurse, it takes the old-fashioned way which is networking, and making contacts.

I don't think new nursing students know about this yet.

Houston is experiencing a unique surplus of nurses currently.

Thousands of nurses from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama ended up in Houston due to Hurricane Katrina. These excess nurses have created an oversupply in the Houston job market, hence new grads will have difficulty landing jobs for now. However, other cities in Texas have a strong demand and will hire entry-level nurses. I'm a newbie who was recently hired in the Dallas-Fort Worth area after 1 day of job-seeking.

thanks for saying this...i was beginning to wonder if we only had 2 cities..lol. There's Texarkana, Longview, Tyler, Lubbock .. Longview is hiring agency nurses out of dallas (my nephew being one of them) to work at the hospital, So evidentally they are really needing some nurses. good luck

hi there i was just wondering where is longview????

I too migrated from Canada, (Winnipeg), I was curious as to why you want Houston. I am currently in San Antonio, and there are plenty of jobs, and Canadians! It would be good to keep your options open.

Best of Luck!
