What's it like having a flexible work schedule?

Published

What's it like being able to work whenever you want? I cannot wait to be a nurse. Working three days a week sounds like heaven. Although, knowing me, I'd most likely do tons of over time anyway lol. What do you like to do on your off days?

And yet they still don't have my exact mindset down to the letter, along with the exact wiring of the neurons in my brain, they also have not been through what i have been through as well. I am not gonna let a few bad apples dictate my experience lol. Like i said. I got excepted into a college university during middle school, out of THOUSANDS of other kids. I was one of the hundred picked. How many people can say that? I take all honors courses, and yet i still have all A's. Most people go for the easiest courses in high school, these are most likely the same individuals who go to nursing school and have a hard time. Not saying everyone who took easy courses in high school had a hard time either. If college level social studies isn't hard for me, the class that requires me to read pages upon pages from my text book every night, isn't hard for me. I can handle what nursing school has to offer. I am not new to all of this. Once i get to college and have to read tons of material, it will not come as a shock to me like most people. I would have already been through similar experiences that have prepared me for everything my future career has to offer.

Oy vey...

Though I'm suspecting we're just being trolled now, I will say this: social studies (you mean sociology, right?) is not hard for anyone in college. It's just one of those things they make everyone take as part of making people more "well-rounded."

Also, I'm curious what you think of critical thinking as opposed to rote memorization.

Listen. Once more. It may not have been enjoyable for you. But it will for me. No where in what i just typed, did i say i would be enjoying myself because of nursing either. In one of my other threads, i specifically say that i would be enjoying myself because college would allow me the time to do the things i couldn't do in high school. Even still, i am sure i will enjoy nursing otherwise i wouldn't be doing it. It's all about what mindset you have when doing all of this. Gosh I'm seeing so much negativity about Nursing, and yet i still feel drawn to it. I wonder why. If Nursing isn't so enjoyable, then why did you continue to push yourself to do something you honestly did not want to do? That's like me spending 14 years in school to become a Neurosurgeon only for the money. Phew. I'm glad i realized that sooner and saved myself 14 years of misery and half a million debt. It fascinates me to see how people are assuming Nursing is a one size fits all and every one who does Nursing have the EXACT same mindset. Like one person may not think nursing is an enjoyable education, but another person is bound to. No one is ever the same. You have a genius IQ? That's good. I do as well. Also am not expecting Nursing school to be easy. But just because it means it won't be easy doesn't mean i won't enjoy myself. What would be the point then? I won't just sit around moping about how hard it is, i'll get up and look at the positive in the situation i'm in.

I'm also wondering when the stream of consciousness will end and the paragraphs will begin. This is fairly unreadable.

It's at my hospital, which is offering high vacancy incentives in all departments because more than 30% of all the RN positions in the entire hospital are vacant. We need 17 nurses per shift on my unit alone and on Saturday night there were only 9 nurses on the schedule. Talk about a day that wouldn't even be worth overtime pay because the working conditions are so bad!

So no, those are not places you want to work.

Here you guys go, here is what a really badly run workplace (mine!) looks like in the staffing department. The mouse is hovering over Sunday night to give a key for what those numbers mean.

So... anybody want a job? I can get you hired. :)

And that is my point exactly.

Nursing may not be glamours for you, but it seems to be for lots of other people. I guess it just depends on the person. Also, yes and no. I meant that in some places, people can ask for over time whenever they want but their schedules also seem to be pretty adjustable. I had one person say that they choose to work only on certain days. So by "whenever you want" i specifically meant, being able to choose what days you work on. I now know that that isn't always the case.

Please give a very specific example about what is glamorous in nursing.

I think I skipped over a lot of his posts. How exactly do you think nursing is glamorous? Because of how much money we don't make? All the body fluids we play in? How we get yelled at by everyone?

LOL i honestly do NOT understand why people assume someone is trolling once they are confronted with the truth and cold hard facts. Like honestly WHY ARE YOU DOING NURSING if it is soooo horrible! Aren't you just wasting your life? Save yourself the pain and misery and fine something you actually enjoy and have no problem what so ever with doing. I have my own reasons for wanting to be a nurse as does everyone else, some i have already explained. Someone needs to pay the bills? okay and? they resort to doing 4 years of schooling, hard exams, among other things, in order to pay the bills? LOL really? Why are all of you people focusing on all the negatives of nursing. You continue to do it and yet it still does not phase me. You should have done your research like me and knew what you were getting into before getting into it. Why does everything have to be about money to you guys? I already said i do not want to go into nursing for money. If i wanted money i would do something completely different. If i wanted money, i would still be wanting to go to school for becoming a neurosurgeon or starting my own business. If you do not like dealing with bodily fluids, then why in the world did you become a nurse? You should have known it came with the package of dealing with sick people. Like come on now man. Even i, a 16 year old already knows this. Thank god i'm not going to be oblivious to everything when i go into nursing. I can handle yelling, i have handled yelling for 16 years. Over time, i have learned to become stronger mentally. I'm not going to let someone yelling, dictate my career, bring me down, or keep me from doing what i believe i will be good at. There is yelling in every profession, and it certainly will not bother me because i am not weak minded. Yelling is a part of life. We need more nurses like me. No wonder hospitals need more nurses all around the country. People go into a profession thinking it'll be easy, completely oblivious to what their getting themselves into. It fascinates me how someone can do a job that entails dealing with sick people and helping them to feel better, yet their afraid of getting a little bodily fluid on them.

Listen. I am not trolling. I am simply wondering why people are giving nursing such a bad wrap yet they continue to spend years, decades even doing it. Like i said. I'd rather be doing a job i love, then a job i hate. All that negativity simply cannot be healthy for you.

l am sure there are plenty of other nurses who would like to beg to differ, i'm sure they love their job. Stuff that bothers someone else, such as bodily fluids or yelling, doesn't bother them because their main priority is helping people feel better.

Paragraphs please. They are your friend.

I was going to read this but gave up two sentences in.

Edit: I skimmed your post. Please don't have this attitude in nursing school or when you are a new nurse. It will get you nowhere. Also, you do realize that people can become a nurse in 1 year, right? I did that & didn't have to do any pre reqs.

What's up with you? Nowhere did i say Nursing school was easy. I also said that i have All A's, will be taking all honors classes again soon, and a college level social studies course. I think i'll be able to tackle nursing school. Nursing school probably wasn't a smooth ride for you, but it DOES not mean it will be that hard for someone else. It's like every response you give me, can get answered with the same exact reply. It sounds like your trying to do your best to turn me away from Nursing and yet *gasp* I'm still here. What in the world does me lucid dreaming have to do with any of this? I can do whatever i please with my consciousness, thank you. On top of that, i can do whatever career i wish as well.

I realize you did not say nursing school was easy. I am simply trying to communicate with you that it is not.

Far from "turning you away". I am attempting to show you reality.

Nursing needs gifted people , such as yourself. Understand that you have a HUGE challenge ahead.

You will have an even bigger challenge with that chip on your shoulder.

When people ask how easy Nursing school is, it's always split into two types of jerking. Group one will tell you how they breezed through school, never read and graduated tops. The second group will tell horror stories of 100 page assignments, studying for days on end and crying themselves to sleep at night. Please realize there are hundred's of nursing programs with thousands of professors. Add onto the fact that we all learn differently and there is no real line in the sand. It will be easy for some, hard for others. Figuring out which I am early on and i'll be okay.

Get back to us when you are actually accepted into a school of nursing.

It's the new admits at shift change.

It's how we get to smell like poo all day because of the gnarly code brown that happened at the start of shift.

It's smelling like bleach after cleaning up because that code brown was c. diff +

It's going 8-16 hours without peeing because the floor is that crazy.

It's all the fun educational stuff you have to do on your days off to be in compliance.

It's annual flu shots that make you feel like crap for 3 weeks after (you'll still get 2 colds in rapid succession so whatever).

It's, ummm, so this patient you've had for several shifts ends up with a + PPD.

It's radioactive diapers.

It's the smell of 80+ ketones in a urine dip.

It's throbbing feet at the end of each shift (and I worked for a well-known luxury brand known for it's high heels and my feet rarely hurt as bad).

It's bloodshot eyes because the air is so freakin dry!!!

It's sweating in PPE and wondering how on earth people working in Ebola-afflicted areas dealt with 100+ temps and PAPRs.

These things are soooooo glamorous. Totes.

And nursing school is all that and more plus additional psychological abuse.
