I just started working the night shift and of course I'm having trouble sleeping during the day. I already tried a sleep mask, to tell my body it's night, but I'm not fully comforable with it. I thought about buying a 'better', more expensive one (by now I just tried a no name mask from a drugstore). But before spending the money I thought I'd ask you:
Which sleep mask do you like best?

I 've worked nights for many years. It was tough for about the first month or so, but I painted my room a nice taupe color, put up room darkening mini blinds, and now no problem. Of course I've never been a morning person, I think I was made for night shift. Listen to your body......many people absolutely can't do nights.

I use an old T shirt or a towel over my eyes, usually I need it just to get to sleep, then I'm fine with the curtains closed.

I bought one made by "Lady Elizabeth" (I think) at Wal-Mart on a whim. I didn't really think it would help, but I was pleasantly surprised.
That one did get a bit loose on my face which I didn't like.
When I went back to buy another I saw some made by "Mary Kate and Ashley". These are smaller and have little sayings like "dream" or "imagine" on them. I think they're marketed toward teens or pre-teens, but they are on the same aisle as the others.
I really like the little Mary Kate and Ashley ones because they have a snug (but not tight) fit and the part on your face is smaller as well.
You might like to try those. I've never had an expensive one. Both brands I've had retail for about $3. I don't have a tiny head or anything, but I did find the smaller Mary Kate and Ashley ones to be much more comfortable.
I couldn't live without mine now. I have several and my husband was even wearing them when he was on nights. You should have seen him in his cute little girlie mask, lol. I'm addicted to them now. I wear them to bed regardless of how bright the room is.

I bought the Walmart special also since I went to second shift. Hubby leaves at seven thirty, I can sleep thru him turning on the lamp, sleep thru the sun peeking thru the blinds. It's very lovely!!

I will be starting on 12 hr night shift soon. What is a good night schedule? I think it would be easier to do all three in a row. But they have me down for some single days. I would be interested in opinions from someone who's been there. thanks PJ
Do you think it's better to use dark curtains or a sleep mask? What's more effective?

I haven't ever used a mask, I don't like having anything on my face while I sleep, drives me a bit batty personally. I put up dark curtains and close up the mini blinds nice and tight to block out all the light I can.
Pjgirl, I would try 3 nights in a row first, that way your body really gets into the swing of things. I am more of a night person myself, and even I have issues if I break my days up, it really renders me useless. And besides, the three in a row if done right gives you a nice block of days off in a row as well! :)

I just use dark curtins and fan....the fan is a must have for me. I work two days on, two days off, four days on, six days off. IMHO this is a great schedule, the two days gets me warmed up, then the four gets me into the night rhythm...and who can argue with six off???It is not for everyone though, some people cant do four in a row...plus I don't have kids or anything so I can sleep all day and not worry about it, husbands at work so its just me.
legs malone, I appreciate your wisdom regarding night shift schedules. I had presumed three in a row would be easier on the body. I am a night person also. But I crash about 4 am.

I used to use a sleeping mask. But when it started to become annoying, I put up dark curtains over the mini blinds. The room stays very dark. The next thing I will buy are lined curtains, to make the room pitch black.

Wow, I guess I'm lucky from what I've read here and from what I hear from co-workers on my floor. I have no problems sleeping after nights, no masks, no dark blinds. I get home at 0800 and I'm asleep by 0815 until like 1300.
