I am also saddened by this. One of the reason I went to school to be an RN was with the hope of becoming a practicing CNM. It is starting to look as though it would be a better choice to be an NP given the above article. Unless of course attitudes shift and Insurance companies back off a bit and let people provide the care patients want.

Someone said it earlier and it is true, hindsight is 20/20. Unfortunately, while this pt chose to seek care, she also made the choice to leave 2 hospitals AMA. She had a history of 2 prior c sections, so it could have very well been she had a bad experience with one and didn't want to be subjected to it again. We may never know the whole story. I just pray for the baby who survived.

My place finally came up with a diagnosis to put on our induction and c section print outs for these social inductions : TOT Tired of toting.

I didn't read through all the posts, so I hope this isn't a repeat, but I have found that my hands are helped a ton by The Body Shops Body Butter. It isn't petroleum or mineral oil based, so you could use it at work, but I just put it on AM and PM. I am currently using the blueberry scent, very nice! My skin survives work and my nails grow in so nicely now, no cracking or splitting!

My place doesn't use Cytotec much, most docs order Cervadil. But, we have three docs know for placing it in the cervix. Twice in my short L and D experience thus far I have seen it happen, one was a pt of mine, my preceptor was able to slide it out and under the cervix. The other wasn't quite so lucky. 5 minutes after placment, the MD couldn't be sure why his pt was hyperstiming, so he crash sectioned her. The Cervadil was nice and bloody from sitting right in that cervix.

I haven't ever used a mask, I don't like having anything on my face while I sleep, drives me a bit batty personally. I put up dark curtains and close up the mini blinds nice and tight to block out all the light I can. Pjgirl, I would try 3 nights in a row first, that way your body really gets into the swing of things. I am more of a night person myself, and even I have issues if I break my days up, it really renders me useless. And besides, the three in a row if done right gives you a nice block of days off in a row as well! :)

As of October of last year, my facility has had the same rules in effect, no false nails or any sort and natural nails must be kept short, neat etc. However, it amazes me working in the MCH unit how many of my coworkers have false nails and it drives me crazy! I have had them myself in the past, and I KNOW how much gunk gets back there that you really can't clean out as well as you could if you didn't have the false nails. And especially since we all deal with babies, it just doesn't make sense, and no one seems to concerned about telling them to lose the nails. *sigh* Sorry about the mini rant. *steps off her soapbox*

What kind of protocol are you working on layna? I know at my place we have one in place to automatically screen baby's urine if mom is 16 or under, precipitous labor, etc. But we don't often have docs order the mec screen, I would be interested to hear more!

Our school used to have a pinning ceremnony, then they decided to add it to graduation, we get pinned as we walk across the stage...it used to be that the classes planned their own ceremony, and a few years back one class went overboard, planned this 30,000 dollar blow out at a country club, and had to fund raise so much, that the faculty saw a noticable drop in thier grades the last year of school, so the faculty took the pinning ceremony planning away from the students

We go by the MD's order and if they are fragile a nurse absolutely goes with them

Ooo, creepy cool stuff, kept me awake after a 12 from hell... The hospital I work at is also haunted, I am on telemetry, and we have a med-surg/ telemetry unit downstairs in the old hospital building. I floated there one night, and got an odd feeling just walking on the floor for the first time. At some point in the shift, just sitting and charting, the unit secretary said something about the "chill" being in the air, I didn't know what she meant, but she explained that there is still a patient who hangs around her room, and anytime the bed is empty, the tele monitor for that bed kicks in with a sinus rhythm, despite the battery being out of the box. Often before she appears, there is a chill in the unit, that night though no one saw her, we brought a patient into the room she's seen in. I have alsoheard that another area down on the first floor that ios currently closed due to low staffing is also haunted. It was the area where many of the CA patients and those who would likely be hospice now were sent to die, one of the monitor techs on my floor said when she worked that area as a unit secretary itmes were forever being moved, charts would end up with missing paperwork and the infamous call lights going on in empty rooms. She told me she would never go back there if the area is reopened, they couldn't pay her enough!

I am actually on campus, but I know the options at the satellite campuses for nursing classes are pretty good, one of the classes I am in now is closed circuted to College of the Sequoias and Antelope valley. I am very happy with the program here, if you can, I would really suggest looking into the RN to BSN program they have here, besides the BSN, you also get a certificate in Public Health which is great to have if you are interested in working out in community health clinincs and the like. Yeah, I moved from San Diego to come to school here.......long story, but I heard all sorts of good things about the program here down south from nurses my Mom worked with who had worked with graduates from this program. I had the same type of reaction, "What??? Bakersfield????" but I do love the program. We are about to go through a BRN visit and hope to be certified by them so you could add that to the list of good things too! OK, I am done being a commercial.......:)
