What's up with all the 'failed NCLEX' posts?

I look through the "what's new" feed and keep seeing posts of nursing students who failed their NCLEX. Is the test getting harder? I remember that my graduating class had only one student that failed NCLEX. Are schools graduating people who are not ready for the test?

Also, someone else mentioned shelling out 600$ for a review course. I was just talking about this tonight. What review course? I did 1000 NCLEX questions as review, and passed the first time.

AND, I had to take the whole test. With a PENCIL. :woot:

hmm, i did no review and passed the first time. with that pencil you speak of.

how much review should you need if you were paying attention? this is not specifically aimed at you, 1000 questions does not seem like a lot compared to some numbers mentioned...

My school had a representative from a review course come and talk to my class about a month before graduation. They like gave this whole presentation that basically convinced us we would fail if we did not take their course. They even had like free review books and prizes for people who paid right there on the spot.

I admit, I was suckered into it and paid 480 for the course (would have been 600 without our university's "special" discount). While I do think the course was kind of pointless, it provided us with A LOT of resources (i.e: books, computer programs, questions), which were extremely useful. I wish I could have paid a cheaper price for the review material and skipped the actual in-person course.

I did pass with 75 Q on my first try. Though, I felt the exam was not as hard as the review course company implied it would be. However, I may have just lucked out and got a good batch of questions. I do think I would have passed without the course though.

FYI: My school, which set all this up, is NOT a for-profit school. It is a well regarded private university with a 92% first time NCLEX pass rate. I felt like our instructor during that last semester made us think that the review course is responsible for their high pass rate though.... :/

I got married and went on my honeymoon 1 week after nursing school ended, had 2 weeks after I came home to study before my boards. So, I did 1000 questions for those 2 weeks. I was afraid of Hawaii Brain, ya know?

I don't think the Grand Canyon has any nursing schools, lol, but maybe you mean Grand Cayman?????

Grand Canyon and Phoenix College I meant , yeah. They're both for profit I believe. I've heard they use a lot ofor very aggressive recruiting tactics and sucker people into signing up for insane loans. Worse, Phoenix Colleget is a known affirmative action mill which preys on an absurd number of poor minority students.

oh, ok, gotcha. I never heard of Grand Canyon College so I did some reading online and found that Grand Canyon University is a small Christian school that had been non-profit up until some years ago when they were deeply in debt, so they became a for-profit school. But according to the info online they did that to get out of debt and are now planning to return to non-profit status. My point is that they aren't like Phoenix University which really does seem to be a diploma mill, you only need a sharp pencil to get in lol. so I wouldn't lump them in together. For profit doesn't mean diploma mill, they aren't all the same. The ones that take any student no matter what their low ability to pass the courses or pass the nclex, those are the real problems.

United States University (USU) is another for profit school that churns out nurses with little to no tutelage. Stay away from this place like the plague!!!

I'm not sure a 'solve my problem for me' person could finish a legitimate nursing school.

I think it's partly the "solve my problem for me" generation. A lot of people who fail seem to have a long list of reasons why it's unfair or not their fault. They also want strangers to tell them what do do instead of figuring things out for themselves

...or maybe I'm just bitter and old :cyclops:

I'm not too sure there's a problem, other than more people having better access to the web, and this forum. The stats on US educated first try pass rates for NYCLEX PN and RN as per NCSBN is:

2015 84.53%

2014 81.78%

2013 83.04%

2012 90.34%

2011 87.89%

2005 87.3%

1988 88%

Seems to vary about 5% from 85%

foreign and second try are much lower

hiring people tell me they're ok with phoenix, and their reputation is good. al the schools have their nyclex pass rates online, which is something to look at.

I don't have a problem with schools making a profit, so long as the education is worth it. They tend to have a reputation of not being worth it.

I think its due to a lot of people going to school at for profit schools, diploma mills, and affirmative action mills...

I know tons of people on this website go to school for nursing in the grand canyon, where nursing school is for profit.

I don't know if i'd go to school there, but it's a great place for diving, hiding your money (so i've heard), and blue headed iguanas!
