What's his blood sugar?

Nurses HIPAA

Published

Question as a new grad RN. When I was in NS, I experienced this...Say the RN or a tech are checking blood sugars and there is a friend or family member in the room and that person asks "so what's his/her blood sugar?" or without even being asked, the nurse or tech taking the BG says "your blood sugar is 200"...

It would be a no brainer to just answer the question, but it seems to me that could and would be a violation of HIPPA without asking the patient, assuming they were A&O, for permission first?

Are you serious right now? It was a typo. Give me a break and find something better to do with your time.

Not only you, but other posters continued the error. And, no need to be testy. Check before you post, or edit after you post. That can go a long way in posting correctly. And, my time is managed just fine, thankyouverymuch.

If you misspelled "the" as "teh," I'd agree with you. But if medical terms are misspelled, I think it's appropriate to point it out. It's not to humiliate you, but to make sure that we are not providing or enabling the spread of technical misinformation on this forum .

If I misspelled HIPAA and someone pointed it out I'd say "oops, my bad!" In fact, I've had to say that more than once on this site. I lived.

This is interesting, because on our nursing care boards it is a spot that say's "blood sugar" and the CNAs write the time and the blood sugar down for the nurse. However, with our blood sugar machines it automatically pops up in the patients chart, so the nurse can see it here too.
