What did you do while waiting to get in to NS?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

What classes have some of you all taken in between finishing your pre-reqs and actually starting nursing school? I didn't get accepted into my school for the fall, and while I'm waiting to find out about next spring and looking into other schools, I want to take some classes or something, but I'm not sure what to take.

One thing I'm looking at doing is taking some of the Medical Coding courses my school offers. I'm hoping I get into nursing school before I can complete the program, but I think it may help in the long run. Most of the courses are obviously related, and if after nursing school I end up workin in a doctors office, I will have the coding experience as well.

Any other thoughts??

Specializes in Infusion.

Lots of people do CNA work either at a hospital or nursing home. I think I might also take the 3 or 4 classes I need that will get me into a RN to BSN program.

Specializes in Ambulatory.

If you're planning on obtaining a BSN (or higher) down the road, perhaps you can work on your lower division GE classes if you haven't done so already. If speaking a second language or having health care work experience can enhance your application, you might want to think about accomplishing them somehow.

Specializes in Ortho/Trauma.

You can go for a EMT-B while you're waiting. In addition, if you are already attending the university, you could also work on your upper division graduation requirements.

Specializes in Oncology/Hematology.

I volunteered in an Emergency Room and did my CNA while I waited. However, if it's classes you're looking to take--I'd STRONGLY recommend taking a Pharmacology class to prepare you for Pharm in nursing school. Some schools even accept this undergrad Pharm class in place of their Pharm class which would really help you out stress-wise in nursing school. There are a lot of places that offer it online too, so it's convenient. If not, or if you've already taken it, I'd take medical terminology. There are a lot of places that offer this class online too. :) Hope this helps!
