What is your unit's Uniform Policy

I have worked at various ob units and usually there have been two ways the uniform policy was instituted. Either the hospital provided scrubs and you changed when you got to the unit or else you provided your own scrubs and wore them in. Our unit has just changed policy to say that you use your own scrubs but you can't wear them in.. you have to bring them with you and change at work. I was wondering what other units do and what you think about the various policies.. also is there any research out there regarding infection rates and uniform policies.. Thanks

Our unit has done it all. originally, when I started 20+ yrs ago we had to were scrubs provided by the hosp, change when we got there and change B4 we went home. We had the designated color scrubs, and now wear just about anything, which brings me to an observation. Nurses in my unit wear whatever they please, a uniform of scrub decent or just a T shirt and pants. I must say that I don't think we look very professional anymore. Which is not to say that as a group we are not excellent nurses, we just don't look it. Not all of us have the body to wear a little T shirt and hip hugger and it is unfortunate that not all of us know it. I can't count the number of times I have had to warn young nurses that I am not interested in looking at their "whale tail" For you who don't know that is the top of their thong panties.

I don't have aproblem with thong panties I just don't want to see them.

I think there is a time and a pllace for form fitting T shirts, low low low rise pants and underwear of questionable purpose. Call me oldfashioned but that's me!

where I'm at now, we have to wear whites and we aren't supposed to wear them in, the hospital does not provide them. It's such a crock. I've been here 3 months and my scrubs are disgusting!

I will never go anywhere I have to wear whites again!

I have a problem with hospital provided scrubs because I need a larger size than they normally have (4X).

We just changed a couple of years ago from barny purple to wear what you want with "mostly" white shoes and NO clogs

Thanks! what happened to make the change back? Why did the policy fail? My hospital is set to launch a new uniforms (vendor chosen). I'm certainly not looking forward to being required to wear anything polyester or elastic.:(

Your input is appreciated!

Thanks, Joey

We can wear anything except solid black and solid red (top and bottom) and we wear them into the facililty.

It is so funny that you say that (about the red and black scrubs) because where I work we wear solid red scrub tops and black scrub bottoms. They look ok, at first we did not want red because we thought it would make mad people madder but we get compliments on our choice of colors. I have even had the song "Lady in Red" sang to me before!!

Our L&D unit wears pink (with the choice of a pink print) and the floor units and each department have their own color combination.

We have to change into hospital-provided scrubs when we come in, and change before we go. We're not supposed to walk in/out with the hospital scrubs on. Maternal-Child wears ceil blue pants (they provide us with tapered leg pants... ughhh) and a button-up angel print top with a garter in the back. They're longer than the average pull-over scrub; I feel like I'm wearing a dress! The top would be better if it were a pull-over! Most of the time we wear the pants, our own shirts and a blue scrub jacket. Since our blue pants don't have pockets in them, I like to grab the MD pants (surgical green scrubs) and use those.... at least their straight-legged too!

We wear hospital scrubs or solid colored scrubs of our own specific to RN's @ our hospital.

Our hospital supplies the scrubs in a certain color for our birthing center employees. We change into them at work, keep shoes at work just to change into and the scrubs are laundered by the hospital. And I think everyone complies with this policy. I prefer to wear street clothes to and from work, especially if i want to get a little shopping done after work. But it does take extra time to allow for changing.

Currently where I work our uniform policy is very...general LOL at least it was in nursing school when we did a project on whether nurses should wear white LOL!

Anyway, from what I have seen our L and D nurses and our NICU nurses come to work in street clothes and change into hospital provided scrubs. Our unit (postpartum) wears our own scrubs.

We are not supposed to wear hole shoes (i.e. crocs).
