Hey everyone. I'm a regular here. I'm currently a LPN student and have always wanted to work in Labor and Delivery. i'm going to do a bridge LPN-RN program. I didn't even realize that L&D has a triage department. what exactly does a Triage L&D nurse do and is it enjoyable? what is a normal day/night like? Thanks
I work in an LDRP. If I am charge/triage, that means I take everyone who comes through the door and I do what needs to be done. That might be labor checks, non-stress tests (schedules and unscheduled), bleeding, lack of fetal movement, drawing blood,. starting Iv's evaluating patients, the list goes on and on. Then, depending on what's up you either send the patient home, keep them, delegate their care to another nurse, what have you. The other night I was in charge and I delivered a baby. You do what you have to do at the moment. I absolutely love triage.
My hospital has a OB Triage unit which is seperate from L&D. They are open from 5 am - 8 pm, M-F. It is staffed by L&D nurses. It doesn't do much good for us nurses on night shift however. At night we triage pt's through our LDR rooms, as SBE described above. I don't think I would enjoy only working Triage. I would miss the deliveries.
