what do you think are the best qualities a nurse or new nurse should have?:heartbeat

Competence (most important), a strong work ethic, and thick skin.

A sense of humor, a strong stomach, and good shoes.

Amongst the usual qualities (such as strength, competence, and compassion), I think having self-confidence is important, too.

If a nurse is too scared of hurting a patient to provide the care required of him/her, that could scare the patient and strain the patient/nurse relationship. The relationship a patient has with their nurse is one of the most important, and if the nurse can't have confidence in herself, the pt can't have confidence in her either.

oh another one based on what is happening in my Nursing School right now...ball gags when the gossips come around!

Compassion, Competence, Efficiency

All of these will come into play if you love people. To me, having a thick skin comes with the job. The best characteristics are for your patients best interest, not yours. Just my thoughts though, I could be wrong. ;)
