What would you do?

There is a nurse in my facility that is outright obnoxious and loud. When dealing with patients she gets very loud, demanding (of other nurses), making all of our anxiety levels rise--when we were fine and dandy. No one likes to work with her and avoids her as much as possible.

She also think she knows everything! When I first started, I was the lucky one to have her as a so-called preceptor. Mid orientation- I went to my NM and DON about her behavior--she no longer is allowed to precept.. (thanking the lord!).

Most of the information she rattles off is not even correct. Knowing the information is incorrect, I dont even bother to correct her because I just dont want to here it from her.

In our unit, we all feel the same way..but does anyone have these same issues? and what do you do?

Since your DON was receptive to your information you provided during orientation I would go to him/her again. However, I would address it as YOUR issue, and not drag your co workers into your conversation. If they have an issue they need to go to him/her. Your DON may decide to gather info from your co workers.

Since you already went to the DON once about her, and she has been at the job longer than you have, I would lay low and hope that others would voice complaints. (And if they complain to you about her, you might suggest they talk to the DON who might be able to address the problems.)

There is one of those in every location. I feel that you have voiced your opinion to the correct person, and received support when they no longer allowed her to precept. At this point, I would deal with it on a case by case basis. When she does this to you, then, you report. If she does it to others, then, they can take responsibility for themselves...they are grown, they also have a mouth and the ability to write a letter or walk to the DON the same way you did.

My only issue is don't let these people use you as their representative. Many tend to hide behind people to let them do the dirty work while their hands remain clean. That is why I say to deal with your personal issues with this person; in fact, I probably wouldn't even mention openly to others that I spoke to the DON about her, because they just may start feeding you with things that they want YOU, rather than they, to report.

If she is dangerous in practice, then, I would report that to the DON, and then, watch my back, cross my Ts and dot my "I"s.

the thing is that she has been reported many of times by various ppl, administration has seen her acting out... you would think the correct steps for discuplinary action would be taken, but obviously they are not

Well if this is the way it is I'd suggest you make the decision as to whether or not you can stand to work with her and if not make a change. Sadly there will lamost always be someone like this on the job. If her behavior is ok with mgt. definitely report it when you have factual incidents but I sure wouldn't paint a target on my butt by complaining about her to them.
