What to study or know before nursing school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Updated:   Published

So basically I've already gotten into school and have a lot of time in my hands. I currently work full time as a security guard at a hospital and well don't do much but surely on my phone and occasionally wrestle with people. Was just curious if someone could push me in a direction if what I should learn before I get to nursing school. I know basic stuff like all the bones and basic medical lingo as I did EMS for a little while.

I second (third? fourth?) Brad's comment about drug calculations! I used his fabulous and thorough information along with a bunch of other resources and practiced a dosage problem nearly every day during the year prior to NS. I know that sounds crazy, but my confidence about math is not great! I have friends who ask ME for help now with math and I passed my Level 1 drug calc. test on the first try without any trouble.

I wouldn't study anything. I'd rest, relax, go on a vacation if you can. Programs, teachers, classes all vary so much, I don't think there's a point in studying stuff that you won't know if you need or not. I mean, yeah - A&P is important, but if you did well in those classes, there's no need to study more (IMO).

I know this is not the popular opinion, but enjoy the downtime.

Now that I have thought about it more, I do agree with this comment!:) I guess, the most important thing is for the person to do whatever it is that they deem important to prepare for the program, be it relaxing or studying.

Actually, try to relax a bit before school, otherwise you might get burned out fast.

Starting an exercise program, even just walking, may help too, in order to relieve your stress and have more energy and stamina.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope it helps you and gives you a boost for the first day of school, so you start with good vibes!:)

Thanks for the nice comments about my book. It makes me feel good that I stuck my nose into the nursing site. I usually stick to helping pharmacy students, but out of curiosity I looked at a dosage website for nurses and couldn't believe how complicated they made it. It had 5 or 6 different formulas just for IV Flow rate calculations. I pictured students trying to understand that with all the other stuff on their plate and figured I could help.

Know APA writing format.

...and find a doctor who will prescribe Ativan or Xanax when you need it while in school.
