What shoes are best for heel pain?

Published

My foot pain occurs in the heels. What shoes would you recommend?

I have always had pain in the heels even while young after standing for long periods of time. Is this something out of the ordinary?

Thanks.

Sounds like it might be plantar fasciitis. Get a good arch support to see if that helps. I just bought Lynco inserts at the Walking Store. They cost about $60 but man my feet feel so much better. They have a machine that analyzes the weight distribution in your foot and tells you which one to buy. My podiatrist also recommends Spenco's that you can buy in sporting goods stores.

There have been a couple of different threads on heel pain ... plantar faciitis ... heel spurs ... in the past. It's a common phenomena among people who work on their feet. You might want to do a search and read all of the comments and suggestions.

As someone who has suffered from it intermittantly for years, I have 2 suggestions.

1. See a podiatrist. They are experts in this health problem and have several treatments at their disposal. It's silly to suffer when there are health care professionals who can proscrible treatments to help you. Personally, I have used prescription orthotics (15 years ago) and cortisone injections (7 years ago) with great success.

2. Change your shoes regularly -- perhaps even in the middle of the day. As both an orthopedist and a podiatrist told me, even the best pair of shoes places the stress on some part of the foot. You need to rotate the points of stress regularly so that the same part of the foot does not receive the stress at all times. Give each part of the foot a chance to rest and recover periodically. Don't put the stress on the same points all the time. It's cheap, commonsense advice that can make a big difference in the long run.

Good luck,

llg

As long as I wear Birkenstocks I do not have the sharp heel pain. I had a Podiatrist tell me to try them.

I love my Birkenstocks (aka Birkis), Clinics (hard to find), Anywheres, and Rockers-I know, this list seems long, but like a prior suggestion, I rotate my shoes on various days so that I distribute pressure to various areas of my feet. My other suggestion: if you find a type you like, buy a couple of pairs, because they change styles every time you turn around, and you may not find another pair that comes close in comfort! Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot guys! I went on the internet and saw a doctor that really knows his stuff. I plan to make an appointment with him. I appreciate your replying to my question. I also like the suggestion of buying 2 pairs if you like them.

Also plan to go to the walking store, and I think the suggestion of changing shoes makes a lot of sense. Again, thanks for your feedback. This is a great site.

was solved when I got Tulis Pro Heel Cups. They're rubber with waffle design, and act as shock absorbers. Felt good.

One thing though--cause they concentrate your weight on the waffle, your shoe inserts are gonna take a beating after a few months.

Hope this helps.

I am really partial to Born shoes, but I don't know if they come in white. I stand for long periods of time, and when I wear them my feet barely hurt at the end of the day.

so if you buy birkenstock your feet and shoe inserts won't suffer either...birkenstock distribute your weight evenly thoroughout the entire shoe...try them...you might like them....
