What is your school's dropout rate?

Published

I was reading over several posts on here and noticed some students saying half of their class has dropped out after the first semester!! I was just curious as to how common that is in these programs? It makes me nervous since I hope to start school in a few months. :) Is nursing school that difficult? or are schools accepting applicants who aren't fully prepared for the demands of the program? So the question is for current nursing students... Have you had several peers drop out of nursing school??

Most of ours have families too and are second career students. The vast majority are in their 30s. We are also NLNAC certified - the only school in the entire state of Texas to be.

I just really reject having families and being second career as a reason to fail or drop out. Too many people do manage to juggle it for that to be a valid excuse. I think it is more a matter of what one is prepared to do to make it and whether one did their homework and took the requirements of it seriously when applying. I see too many here who complain about the amount of time/effort nursing school takes. It isn't as if that is some big hidden secret nobody talks about.

Dude, put the soapbox away. Also, congrats on attending such a fabulous school.

Cookie for you.

Who said anything about 'family' being an excuse?

I gave a reason. My reason based on my assumption...as an outsider looking in.

In truth, these people dont broadcast to the world and I don't ask b/c it's not my business....

Some do have difficulties organizing their lives -- and, no...some don't have access to complaining students on AN.

No, I have no children to look after. I'm just saying....

If I'm not in their situation, it's not for me to say what they can and can't handle...

You seem to have mistaken my reply for a personal attack. If you read the other replies, you were not the only person bringing that up as a reason for failure. I believe being a public Internet forum, this is a forum open for and intended for the exchange of information.

That being said, AN is far from the only source for information about the rigors of nursing school. I knew it long before ever coming here and so did most others. Your ascertation of some "not having access to complaining students on AN" is pointless. There are better, more reliable, less biased sources of information out there, specifically from the schools and the students who go to them individually.

As for saying what people can and cannot handle, that is my point exactly. People with jobs and children can and do handle nursing school just fine.

Best of luck in your studies and growing a thicker skin. You will need it. And for the record, I am most definitely not a "dude".

Hello there. My school dropout/fail rate is kind of high. For example the year before me had 40+ students and their class is down to 14 now. My school doesn't have a waiting list however they have clever ways to gently let you out of the program. First there is a dosage calculation test that you need to get a 100% on and you have 5 tries for the 100%. If you don't pass after your 5th try you get kicked out. Another way students leave the class is by not maintaining a 77% for the class.

we started with 94, we are down to 72 in our may '12 class. we have the rest of this semster and next semester ..so we'll see how many well lose between now and then.

I dont think that students who get in arent well prepared, but i think they mainly drop out because they dont realize what nursing or nursing school is all about. they either have what it takes or they cant hang & drop out.

We started with a class of 56 and are now at 55. Yes we lost 1 at about the week and a half mark, and its the first semester. She had something come up I guess. We did ask students from the semesters ahead of us and they said normally you will lose between 2-4, but we will end up gaining some from a neighbor island or from someone who may have taken a LOA and is trying to grab a spot again. Either way my school has a pretty good success rate thankfully.
