What to say about not working since May 2013?

Anyone out there have any advice to give. Just landed a great interview and right away on the phone was asked why I am applying for my first nursing job since graduating last May. I don't want to say I failed the exam because I am worried that will alter her judgement of me. What have other people said? Or should I just be honest about the exam? Please help! Thanks!

You could say that you were taking care of personal and family issues.

"I am still searching for a job, but I took the time that I had free to get XYZ certifications, take a course on ABC and volunteer at 123 place"

EDIT: I am from CA and there are several May 2013 graduates who still don't have jobs. Either you live somewhere where there isn't a glut of nurses or the people in the management at the places you are applying to are totally clueless. The job market is brutal and awful.
