:redbeatheWell, I am on a Community College Pre-Nursing Certificate Program. The 1st semester I just took a couple of classes to acclimate myself to the College and studying habits again. I started with the Computer required class and Student Development. I just registered for the Fall semester and will take a full course load. Human Biology, Algebra, English, and Medical Terminology. Hopefully, Spring semester I will be ready to tackle the first A&P class along with Microbiology. I want to get this thing done. I do not want to have to be tackling things like Public Speaking, Psychology, Sociology, Ethics, etc., once I am accepted into the Program, so I am taking the time to complete all Non-Nursing classes before I apply. Of course I must throw the dreaded Chemistry class in there at some point. I don't expect this to be easy but, at my age I am just ready. I've had to put it off to raise my family, and now it is my turn. My dream is to work with Hospice Patients. That is where my heart is. You have to do this in the way that works best for you. If you can begin now, by all means do.:loveya::heartbeat Good Luck!!
What pre-req classes did you start out with and how many classes at first did you take? My mom is trying to convince me to start out with 2 classes at first because she said its gonna be a lot of work and Im gonna have to get used to it. So I was just wondering how everyone else started off...
I took just one class ( a developmental math class) and I took it online before I quit my career back in 2005. I didn't start with one class to ease my way in, I did it because I didn't know if I could do the math or not. If I couldn't succeed at the class, I knew I'd have to reevaluate my academic plans.
I'm happy to say that I did well in the class, left my career, and start nursing school in Fall 2008!
Do you work? Have you ever taken college courses before?
It really depends on what responsibilities you have, and what your motivation level is.
If you have never taken a college course before, I can see how starting light might be a good idea. You are still very young, so an extra semester won't be a big deal to you. It is most important to get good grades. The schools are so competitive, that often a B is not good enough. There is no point speeding through the prereqs, only to get turned down when you apply. You'll just end up retaking them, anyway.
I dont work right now...I live with my mom and she said i could just go to school if i wanted to and not work...(even though i dont feel comfortable not having a job and still living with her)But basically i wont be busy..and i took one college course for a month before and it was a private college for medical assissting so..i dont know if you count that most ppl tell me private colleges arent real colleges but i had a lot more work for one month then a lot of community college students did..
If you are not too busy with other commitments then you can take more than two classes!! i took 4 classes and had a total of 15 credits my first sem. bt then again i dnt have and kids or other commitments that take time. I still worked part tme at least 25hr a week and still made great grades! if you want it you have to go for it !!
I took 3 classes my first semester - Biological Sciences I, Beginning Algebra, and Introduction to Computers. I also had an 8-5 Monday through Friday job. I took algebra and the computer course online, so that gave me a lot more free time to study and do course work. I had class Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9.
It was not that difficult, but I did spend many lunchbreaks and weekends studying. Like others have said, how many classes you should take depends on your studying habits and motivation. If you aren't working, taking 2 courses should not be a problem. Good luck!
Thanks!! I was thinking of starting out with 3 classes...but I was gonna take them all on campus because I heard sometimes the teachers online are a little tricky..but my mom still says she thinks I wont be able to handle all three classes at once.Which doesnt make sense because I dont have any kids and am currently unemployed...I dont think she really knows what I am capable of..
