"They are going to have to take the baby"
I don't know why but that statement makes my jaw clench up everytime I hear it.
I had a patient the other day ask me how I was going to insert a foley since "the head is down there, wont that hurt the baby?" For the love god, people .... come on .. 2 HOLES! SERIOUSLY!
and my favorite of all time ...
"Does that machine beep everytime I dilate?" .. this one left me speechless
Please share your "omg, no she didn't say/ask that" quotes
i almost forgot how about when you do an sve on a pt and you have two fingers about 1-2 inches in thier lady partsl canal and they almost come off the table writhing in pain.... owwwwww...oowwwww breathing like they are in labor. it makes me wonder ummm how did you get pregnant in the first place? i understand if the cervix is in her tonsils, but 2 inches come on.....surely dad is larger than that:clown:
sorry this is so long but, i have to tell you guys...i love the patients that come in and they are all smiles and they don't want any kind of pain meds...
" i am gonna do it all natural" i say ok... in my head i am thinking when you get a good three cm we will call anesthesia. sorry to ramble....

i think you need to realize that there's a difference between having even the most gentle lady partsl exam and having intercourse with your husband/boyfriend- especially to a heavily pregnant woman. all those hormones, engorged blood vessels etc can make the area extremely sensiitve! i've also found that many of these women have a history of abuse. just a couple things to try to keep in mind, if we can show our patients a little sensitivity and be respectful it makes the experiences less unpleasant for everyone
it used to really irk me when pts used to say things like, "that's good, right?" (about a 160/90 BP). i always felt like blurting, "no, that sucks!" or about a 90/50 BP: "how am i still alive?!" they say. i just used to want to roll my eyes and promise them they won't die.
Had one pt's visitor in room. Took pt's BP, it was high. visitor made the comment that she thought good blood pressure was your age plus 100. yikes, esp since pt was in their 80s, and the visitors were close to 80
I love it when you go into a patient's room to start an IV or some other procedure, and the patient's family asks, "do you know what you are doing?" I am so tempted to say, "well sort of, you see they were short staffed tonight, so they just yanked me off of the street corner - hey I clean-up pretty nicely don't I? I love the scrubs!". Or, my personal fave "No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!". Geeezzz :rotfl:
LMAO!!:rotfl: :rotfl: :yelclap: :yelclap:
What about the Dad standing over his infant in the ICN , seeing his 3 lb son on a vent preparing for transport. " When can he be circumcised ?? "
I've heard the same thing when the baby is a 500 gram 24-weeker. "Can he be circumsized yet?!?!" Well...considering the fact that his member is the size of a raisin...and the fact that he's currently fighting for his life...NO!!!!
Sometimes, you can tell it's very overwhelming and they're in shock and stuff just comes out of their mouths because no one ever prepares for the NICU. But when they're consistantly more concernced with stuff like circumcision and pacifiers than the fact that their baby has 8 IV pumps going and is getting 100% oxygen on the vent...
One busy, busy day in the ER, with patients in the halls on stretchers and chairs, and NO availble place to put a new patient; a mom brings in her 16 y/o son with an obvious fracture of the lower arm...the boy is grey, diaphoretic, and vomitting. I grab a wheelchair and gently sit him in it, quickly splint the arm. I get an order for IV morphine , so my next priority is to get an IV in him...a couple of feet away, a young girl in a stretcher is eating crackers; the crackers are on a table. I say, "Excuse me, I need this table," and set the IV equipment on it...I start the IV, get pre-op labs, and medicate the boy, and the entire time, I hear from the young girl, "sh*t, I can't believe you took MY table, I needed that table to set my crackers on, give me back my table...etc., etc....Yes, in front of the mom and the boy, non-stop...people are unbelievable!
This was from my grandmother. I just graduated on June 10th with my ADN. I talked to my grandmother over the phone and she says, "It took you that long just to get your ADN, why didn't you get your BSN? You can do so much more with a bachelor's degree." She really hurt my feelings! My dad is always asking me if I'm going back to school to get my MD and I always say no way! I would never want to be an MD!

It annoys me too when people act like you chose nursing as if it were an easier field to enter or a step down from being a doc. Like the two are barely related. I simply reply to those comments with, "No, I much prefer the challenge of nursing to the hum drum of issuing orders without really knowing the patient." (No offense to docs, but we all know who spends more time at the bedside.) Ever see the t-shirt that says, "Need a doctor? Call a nurse." I LOVE IT!
And then there are the pts./family that gripe about their healthcare costs. I wish I could do something for ya'; however, I'm in the same boat! Of course, I don't say that, but I hate being accused of being associated with a "racket" and accused of giving this or that "just so the hospital can make more $$." My all time favorite is, "My bill wouldn't be so high is you didn't make so much money." Hmmmmm.....
Oh yeah, once I took care of a congressman who felt that everything should get to go home with him at discharge....wheelchair, O2 tank.....when I advised him otherwise, he got ticked and told me that he knew XXXXXX (the CFO of the hospital) and she would let him have it. I got the supervisor and she/we explained to him that if we got a call or letter from the CFO saying it was OK, then we'd send it along with him. Of course, that never happened.
I do love the race for the area's first New Year's Baby. On Dec 31st, a couple who was in very, very early labor came to the hospital and asked for a C-section to be done at 12:01 so they could "get the money, you know that they give you for having the first baby."![]()
Where these nutso ideas come from, I'll never guess.....
Ya know, I think that they make that "illegal" in the New Year's Baby race. It really stinks for the couple who has been in labor for several hours and then someone comes in with a prearranged c-section to be delivered at 12:01. I can't forget the couple from some podunk town who did that here recently. Everyone, including the physician who happened to have privileges at one of the major hospitals was from this podunk town and they wanted their 15 minutes of fame. They wanted the baby to be the first born in our city as well as their own. They devoured all the TV time they got by bragging that the mom herself was the New Year Baby for this small town. She was born at the end of February.
Insane. Wrong. And unfair to those who have been laboring all day long.:angryfire

I was glad this New Year's, that of the 4 area hospitals in our county delivering babies this year, none of us had a last minute CS. The area's New Year's baby wasn't born until 3:30 am. Our hospital's NY baby was born at 5:52 am. The funny thing, at midnight, neither hospital had anyone close to delivering. These ladies walked in later, close to complete. The year before, one of the hosp, did have a CS right after midnight.
