What OTC meds do you keep in your clinic?

I am a school nurse for a small community school district. Therefore I have an entire school, prek throught 12th grade. I have tried a million different ways to tell parents that if they want their child to recieve medications (otc) they must bring it from home to keep on hand at the school. I do keep medicine such as tylenol, ibuprofen, tylenol cold, tums, throat losenges, and glucose tabs. But I feel that these things I have bought should be used in emergency situations or as I see needed. I do not have the funds to supply the entire school medications because parents won't bring it it. But I feel terrible denying a child tylenol when they have a headache. How do you handle this situation and what medications do you provide the students?

I'm in Illinois also. I'm feeling like I'm doing some things that perhaps I shouldn't. Our medication guidlines are up to the districts correct? Our medication authorization sheets include giving otc tylenol/ibuprofen, first aid treatment, and tums. But we do not have a physician who's written any orders. Am I overstepping bounds? This was the practice before I got here and just assumed it was kosher. That's what I get for assuming huh? I do try other methods before I resort to medication. My problem is I have no sink for soap and water, gargles, or any of that. I'm so limited its rediculous.

I am wondering why the salt water gargles are off limits.

I wouldn't give the tylenol/ibuprofen/tums without MD orders, but that is just me.

I work at a primary school (K4-3rd). OTC meds are only given if the parent provides them and signs a permit.

I am allowed to use antibiotic ointment, ora-gel and hydrocortisone. I use peppermint for stomach ache, sore throat and cough. Ice packs and water for headaches.
