What does a New Grad have to do to get a job???

Published

I graduated in December 2008 with my BSN and have an active license in the State of Hawaii (where I live) and in State of Washington (where I was hoping to get a job but was greatly disappointed)... I have now started to look in California, Texas, and Arizona in attempts to widen my search. I have become increasingly frustrated with looking for jobs and well I have run out of ideas.

I was considering in applying for a facility I had my clinical at which specializes in medically fragile children but my problem with that is although I kind-of like it, that is not where I want to be at all.

I think to myself if I take that position, how can I move up and into a hospital where I want to be. I love Telemetry and Critical Care and that is where I want to be but if I work a specialty area I would feel like I am going to be stuck there and won't be able to do what I really... really want to do because I have specialty/LTC experience and hospitals always mention they want ACUTE care experience. I also have a feeling that I will not be happy there and that I waisted my time in nursing school. Am I being too picky??

*Sigh* I always had high expectations for myself and well finding the right match for me would mean so much... I just don't know what to do anymore... Any suggestions?????

Specializes in Med/Surg.

In all honesty by this point just get a job! Worry about transferring later. Try to get a job in med/surg first but if all you can get is with children then take it. I have only been out of school 2 months and I just want experience!

Specializes in ER.

Oh, no!!! I'm in Hawaii also but am just starting on my path to getting my degree. I had heard from a nurse friend that there is a demand for nurses in Washington, so I'm discouraged to hear that you didn't find a job there -- or here. I have a long way to go, so I'm hoping that things are different then. Sent you a friend request if you don't mind. Just was curious to find out if you went the 2-yr route at KCC or 4 yr at HPU. I want to do the 2-yr assoc. route but I'm hearing that it's extremely difficult to get into the nursing program at KCC. :crying2:
