Towards the end of my bachelor's degree (I majored in economics), I realized I wanted to get into healthcare. I originally thought about doing physical therapy (which still seems very interesting to me), but I realized I would realistically need to complete a second undergrad (bad gpa and all the wrong lower division coursework) to have a shot at getting into PT graduate school.

I picked nursing as my target (this is probably 1 and a half years ago) because it had the lowest barrier of entry and it would allow me to find employment very quickly. I've since become enthralled with nursing as a profession, and I expect I'll remain a nurse (though I want to become a nurse practitioner or a CRNA later on).

It has good pay, stable employment, felxible hours, comfortable uniform (I don't like suits, which is what I'd be wearing otherwise), lets me work with people, and most importantly gives me a chance to preform work I can be proud of doing.

The only thing I dislike is that it is still a predominantly female profession (after my brother heard I got accepted, he said he had been so wrapped up in his own stuff he completely forgot to make fun of me for becoming a nancy boy, lol), but that seems to be changing quickly enough. It's not necessarily bad to get a chance to meet tons and tons of women. I can handle it, in any case.

damn man, i think you just explained my EXACT situation...no joke...other than the brother part (i dont have one) this story is damn near identical to mine

I like to think that I haven't picked anything. I think that nursing has picked me. I am not a nurse yet, but I'm on my way to applying for the nursing program this summer. I was raised in the medical field my whole life. My grandfather was a podiatrist and had his own private practice and I was always fascinated by what he did. I used to want to be a doctor, but changed my mind after high school. I feel nursing is the best fit for me. I can't wait to work in a actual hospital and do a job I love. Like they say, if you do something you love you never have to work a day in your life..........

I worked in housekeeping at a hospital for a few years. I found myself working down in the emergency room cleaning rooms one night. When a tornado came through town. A disaster code was called and the ED was flooded with pts. It was a pretty wild scene. There where stretchers flying back and forth to ct, xray, surgery. Everyone had a job that they were doing and helping the patient. And there I stood with my cleanin' rag not able to help at all. That's the moment I decided to be a nurse. I enrolled back into the CC the next week.

That is awesome I applaud you. Be the best nurse you can be.

I was that kid who found the bird with the broken wing, and patched him up to fly.

I have very blue-collar sensibilities, and to me Nurses are to Doctors what Carpenters are to Architects.

And I just love people.
