I'm an inpatient hospice nurse, looking at moving to med-surg or ICU soon. I love the opportunity to educate my patients and their families. I worked a pretty terrible shift last night, but one of the bizarrely bright spots was spending time with a patient's wife explaining to her what DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) looks like and why her husband's body was acting this way. I love taking the mystery out of conditions and experiences that are usually very scary; it takes some of the fear factor out of it for everyone, and it stretches my pathphys muscle reeeeeaaaal good.
I've even had a few children visiting loved ones who have gotten curious about what is going on with their loved one, so where appropriate, I love enlisting their help (e.g. "Does grandpa like to have music or no music to go to sleep to?") and giving simple explanations of some treatments, such as how a port works. I keep my fingers crossed that I've created a few little nurses, because some of these kids could be awesome!
I work at a very tiny middle school, the way some of our staff drama can be, but I have a number of coworkers that I can always count on. The teamwork is really great and can inspire huge warm fuzzies when the moment is right. That makes even the roughest shifts doable.
Hi Jen!
I love the wonderful physicians and fellow nurses I work with. I spend a lot of time educating young (and not so young) people about STI prevention and birth control methods , which is the best part of my job (other than my co-workers! ). It's truly rewarding .
Lots of other things I love about my job, and about nursing....... :)
Best wishes!
I work in LTC and always say it's like a building full of extra grandmas and grandpas. I truly love the people I work with and feel such honor to work in their "home" and get to know them. It is sad when they pass, but so worth it to know I have helped them have a happy end of their life and gotten to know them on a personal level (Within professional boundaries of course). I also love my coworkers and we make a great team.
I also work in the SNF of my LTC and love seeing people get to go back home and know I helped them get there.

I see a lot of reasons why nursing is stressful, hard, frustrating and the like. As a pre-nursing student, can you share the things that you love about your job?
Thanks :)
