What do you love and hate about NICU?

I work in a pediatric observation unit that is closing soon. I have the opportunity to go to NICU after the unit closes. I have a few other options available to me as well but i'm thinking of taking the NICU job. I've spent the last couple of days over in NICU shadowing nurses but i've only been on the 'feeder grower' side. I have a few months to make my decision but I really want to weigh all my options before I decide. I would hate to end up in an area that I didn't really enjoy.

What do you love the most and hate the most about NICU?

Interesting question. I'm newer to the NICU (since November), so I'm still figuring that out myself.

what I love about NICU is hearing the cry of a newborn baby. It's like the sound of life.

what i hate about NICU is hearing no cry from a newborn baby (but breathing). It means busy.

That's the best feeling, WanderingNurse45, when I'm at a delivery (even if it's a routine c/section) and I hear that first cry. There is a sigh of relief that goes around at the warmer.

Just an update. I took the NICU job and I love it! Best decision I ever made.

I love when the parents are so appreciative what you do for their child. What I dislike about the NICU is when nurses are not heard when they express concern about their little patients.
