I understand that there are five areas of nursing
Mental health
Adult
Child Paediatrics (Sp?)
Learning Disabality
Midwifery
My question is would you retrain into another area or have you retrained?
Was this easy to adapt to?
I have heard many nursing student (freinds) say i couldnt go into this area or that area as it would be too upsetting, would be extreamily hard work.
My thoughts are that each area of nursing has specific pros and cons what is an enjoyment for one nurse could be something that another dislikes.
Has the line of work between each area ever crossed for you to change your mind on them for example mental health amongst those without mental health illness patients?
Hope the above question makes sense
I look forward to your views

I trained as a registered general nurse, they dont do generalistic training like this anymore. It means I trained in all areas without one specific area. I am also a RM (registered Midwife) I did an 18 month course purely doing midwifery at honours degree level post RN. It was difficult to access but the course was enjoyable. I got paid to do the course at the grade I was working at as a RN. I feel I was lucky to have the opportunities to do both RN and RM training.

My experience is much the same as madwife's. I am a general trained adult nurse but also trained to be a midwife. I haven't practiced as a midwife now for some years so that is purely a paper qualification. I would need to retrain now if I wanted to go back into that field.
I work in telephone triage now and work with all of the groups you mentioned. I agree they are all different and do have their own challenges and up sides and down sides.
I wanted to be a mental health nurse when I started my training, but after a placement realised it was not for me, and I guess neither was midwifery as I have spent more time with surgical patients and cancer patients than anything else...
Are you thinking of training or are you a student?

I too trained the same way as Kay and Fonenurse and did a little bit of everything, I just didn't do midwifery. I originally trained as a enrolled nurse and in 1998 did a conversion course to staff nurse
Thank you for everyones reply.
I was just curious more than anything to see who stayed with their origional training and how often nurses go on to retrain in other areas. Hoping to become a potential mental health nurse

i did paediatrics only, no adults. I am currently doing a specialist community public health nursing honours degree (Health visiting) which is completely different from working in a hospital and i love it!
