I'm in my first year of a BSN program and am taking my first informatics course this semester. Can someone explain to me exactly what informatics is? We've already had a few classes, but I honestly can't say that I even understand what we are supposed to be talking about. I'm not sure if my prof is a scatter brain, or if all the things we are talking about is informatics? We've basically discussed how to do research and nursing classifications... I'm confused.

Nurses working with computer applications designing, anyalzing, Implenting new programs. Educating nurses and staff on new programs. This it in a nut shell. I am in medical informatics which is like above except that I educate and help design screens for physicians.

Greetings Sugarssweet,
The recently re-defined Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics practice defines the specialty as one "that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and coommunicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice."
Please see my other posts on the NI forum and do an Internet search for additional information on this specialty.

I never even heard of this in nursing school!!!
As a fresh LPN sitting on 26 years as a software engineer, this job would great!
No pill passes, no ordering chucks, no working off the clock to finish up......

Well, I sure hope you get the position, and that you enjoy it as much I enjoy mine!
I have been an LPN for 30years this June, and I can tell you how I wish I had found this position years ago!
Now I must tell you that everyone in our healthcare system who works in I. S. are salaried. But I do not have a problem with this at all, but I bring it up because of your statement about not have to work off the clock.
In my position, I have work short days and long days. Weekends and holidays are rare, but you do take call, and during downtimes you maybe needed.
Having said that, I wanted to ask you why you decided to become an LPN, after a career as a software engineer??
Thanks, and Good Luck!

We are organizing a Disease Management department which will use the hommed telemonitors, is this informatics ?
Yes this would fall into Informatics and more specifically into the subspecialty of telemedicine, telehealth or telenursing.

Yes. As an LPN who went to nursing school after my mainframe job went overseas, informatics is Heaven.
I love being the geek nurse. I talk clinical AND tech.
:)
And you'll get it.
