I work days in a Neuro ICU and have visiting hours 10hrs on my shift...from 8am to 6pm. Families stress me out! I could get a whole lot more work done if we just limited the ICU visitation to let's say 4 hrs...You'd think after having brain surgery you woulndn't want someone all over the bed raising your pts. BP. 10 hrs on end.

How long is everyone elses visiting hours in their unit?

First I would like to thank everyone. :bowingpur I can not believe I found this site. I do not feel alone in the questions I have and not knowing where to find the answers. Thanks again to ALL

We have a 14 bed ICU/CCU and it is a free for all 24/7.

Talk about added STRESS. Our former CEO thought it would be good. WELL>>>>>>>it does delay care to the other patients because Susie q's family thinks Susie is the only one that is ill.

I would like to go back to structured times except when the patient is going to pass.

:yeah:

I thought I had it bad....sheesh.

How many of you have ever had a family member in a critical care unit?

I have - many times. NOTHING could keep me out of there.

I have had family members in the ICU, and I respected the visiting hours knowing the nurses had things they had to do during those visiting hours. I also knew they would call or come and get me in the waiting room if something went wrong. I also knew that if my family member was terminal, I could stay with my family member 24/7, and I wouldn't bother the nurses for stupid ****. And this was all before I was a nurse. And yes, Security can and will keep you out of there if needed.

Voting for locked doors in the ICU

Absolutely no visitors between 7-9 am and pm. We are in a locked unit and have very strick visiting hours. We get a lot of surgeries, recoveries and do procedures at the beside a lot so we limit the visiting. I could never work in a unit with open or frequent hours, and I dont think the physicians I work with could either. We opened our unit up a few years ago and it was a nightmare for everyone, so they closed them again. In all honesty, sometimes if we have several hearts comming out we dont even open them for half the day which is nice.

I vote with Dorie. I work in an inner-city trauma unit, and our doors are locked, but its a little silly because everyone who comes to the door and knocks gets let in by whoever is closest to the button - we're all too busy to stop and interview them.

I agree locked doors would be better, but if the condition changes family at the bed side is a given.

I live in the UK and at the time my father was admitted to ICU there were no beds anywhere. He had to be nursed in theatre recovery on the vent until a bed came up about 100 miles from where I lived. The theatre staff were fabulous and let me sit quietly with him until he was transferred. At the new hospital, staff also very kind, welcoming and fully understood that I had a long journey to get there. When they realised the travelling problem I was offered temporary accomodation. Sadly my dad died after some weeks but the attitude of the nursing staff was such a comfort during that time.

As for our ICU visiting hours: 11am to 1pm, then 3pm to 8pm daily. When patients are very poorly of course that is waived but we do try to keep to the 1 to 3 rest period for the patients.

We just changed our visiting arrangements. The lunch time quiet period has been extended by an hour so visiting is now 11 to 1, then 4 till 8.

That extra hour with no visitors was great.

we dont have any rules for visitation! Even children are allowed in our ICU! Our management says don't deny anyone!

we have NO VISITING between 9am-11am and 1pm-3pm ( and those are the only four hours that are visit free. an not begging or pleading will let anyone in AT ALL

anyone can visit anytime in otherwise, HOWEVER its locked door facility and we generaly try to minimise visitors as much as possible so that we can get to do our work( it works well though) coz we have locked doors as well. we do not let visitors in during change over either

then again depends on the case if we have say under 18's parents can stay in all through, or if we have paliated patient family can stay in,

and children are not allowed in only a few cases where wife gives birth while hubby is in ICU,
