What are ICU managers looking at in a cover letter?

Nurses Career Support

Hello guys. I am currently applying for jobs and I really want to work in the ICU. During my rotations I have realized that I thrive in a high acuity setting and love the autonomy that ICU nurses have. I feel like I can really utilize my critical thinking skills in this unit and I was wondering what nurse managers are looking for in a graduate nurse cover letter. Thanks for all of your help!

Specializes in Nursing Professional Development.

The ones I know are looking for experience. They will hire new grads, but they are looking for new grads who have had experiences (either in school or as a job) that have prepared them for the intensity of the ICU work environment.

Specializes in GENERAL.

Spelling, punctuation and grammar for starters.

Do this and it will put you in the 99th percentile of all qualified applicants.

A great side benefit is she may even think you're smart.

Not an ICU manager, but I am a manager.

I look for something that sets the candidate apart from others, and is also able to convey what THEY will bring to the table.

Make sure you have accurate information about the hiring process & tailor your cover letter accordingly. In my part of the country, new grads are hired via residency programs rather than into a specific department. In this case, the ICU manager may have input, but will not be making the 'hiring' decision.
