I hear on the first day they will throw sputum at us just to make sure we are not nurse material by any chance
:chuckle
I love my RTs!! They come and suction out all the nasty crap out of my babies while I sit there and gag the whole time. And they enjoy it ..... they're like "oh yeah ...... lots of junk in there!!"
That's funny.![]()

Yes, I can't wait to become an RT. Bring me the good stuff. Where it at?
Every program is different.
In mine:
First semester - general overview of respiratory system, trach care, equipment, tank duration, magic box, O2 flow rates, suctioning...easy stuff.
Second semester - PFTs (pulmonary function tests), noninvasive ventilation (BiPap, IPPB, CPap), Home care, and pulmonary rehabilitation
Third semester - considered the breaking point (most students fail out) ventilators and typical modes, physics, formulas/equations.....all the good stuff!
Fourth semester - More ventilators (modes like PVRC/Bilevel) - hemodynamics, ACLS, ECGs.
Fifth and final semester - Peds and Neonates....board preparation.
Every semester - case studys (10page minimum), SOAPs, pathology and some sort of speciality project that required hours outside of clinicals. Oh and I can't forget the sputum bowl!!!!
Very challenging and time consuming program - but very rewarding.

I keep hearing that most students fail out... it's starting to scare me. Why do they fail? What were your clinicals like?
kharing,
Does a respiratory student have to be really good in math to be successful? I am a bit behind but I'm working my way back up through developmental classes. I won't start algebra until spring though next year, and in February I will already be applying to schools to start respiratory in either summer or fall.

I know there are a few RT or RN's who used to be RT's here. Can anyone tell me what to expect in school?
