What the heck?

So, I started class today and learned that my A&P I Lab is self-taught .. like what the heck? Is this normal?

For those of you who have taken A&P, were your labs self-taught also? It doesn't seem like it will be too bad, besides all of the memorization, but the self-taught thing kind of caught me off guard.

What do you mean self taught? Is it online?

No my labs were not self taught. We did quite a few dissections that required teacher instruction.

No it's not online. There's someone instructing the lab, but she told us it was "self-taught." So basically we have to figure out where every muscle, bone, etc is ourself. They give us a key model which tells us the name of whatever we're looking for, then we have to locate it on our own.

Mine was pretty much self taught. The teacher was in the room (or rather in her office next to the room) for questions but that is it. The lecture was pretty much self taught too. Not online.

We had a great instructor. He went through all the material, showed us all the features and processes on the bones, walked us through using the microscopes, asked tons of probing questions, told us what to study for tests..... It was a great class. I really enjoyed it...

Mine were also self-taugh. My professors just talked and talked with no set topics or particular method or plan. They just told us when the exams were, and that's it. They were a good source of information if we had questions, but it was clear that we must take initiative and teach ourselves. Many college level courses expect this of their students, and it is not uncommon at all. This is also how some are weeded out. You just got to step it up, and do what you got to do!

My advice is to get organized, and make a point to speak with the instructor in their office during each class. Prepare a set of questions for them. It will give you a good opportunity to let them get to know you and possibly for future recommendations.

I had to teach myself everything in lab. Honestly it's easier that way. Having a professor lecture on anatomy is SO BORING. Teachig yourself all the bones, muscles etc is the way to go.

Specializes in None.

For my A&P 2 class the Lab part was self taught. Which was new to me too. My personal opinion, I didn't like it. I paid $500 (out of pocket) for this class and didn't even get a teacher for half of the class. I also didn't see any point in showing up when it was self taught, but if we didn't she would count us absent. I also didn't like it because, I was teaching something to someone and I wouldn't know if I was correct or not. I felt the instructor went to school to teach the information, not us. I didn't like it at all. However, some people do better like that because, they are talking out loud, getting feedback from people other than the instructor.

Hi, I see by your screen name that you are nearby. I'm at NWCC, I really liked our Lab Teacher.... he was great except he was a stickler for spelling :-)

Oh I see what you're saying. But still no it wasn't self taught. My teacher went through all of the "parts" and showed us exactly where they are. He showed us via powerpoint and models. He was awesome :)

Hi neighbor!! I would totally go to NWCC if it wasn't a requirement that you must be a MS resident.

My A&P 1 & 2 professor's main school is NWCC though and he was excellent!

I did the lecture online, that was tough!!! I did my lab at the campus and our Instructor was great. We had bone kits on the table in front of us, models at the front of the room, he went over everything in detail and made it a lot of fun. When we were looking at cells in the microscope, he would go from station to station and make certain we all knew what we were looking at. Class would end early most days but he would sit there with anyone who wanted to stay longer and familiarize themselves with whatever we were looking at that day.
