What are some good tools for a pediatric nurse who is a new grad?

Published

I am a new grad and just got hired on a pediatric floor. I was wondering what do I need before starting work. So far I can think of...

-scrubs, of course..

-nice shoes (any recommendations? I think the slip-ons are pretty cool...advice?)

-stethoscope

-pen light

-I have a 2011 Mosby's Nursing Drug Reference...do you think I should purchase a current one? Do experienced nurses use personal printed drug references when resources are available in the hospital?

-Should I purchase my state's Nurse Practice Act?

-Should I purchase Pediatric Nursing Scope & Standards of Practice from ANA?

-Am I missing any important books or references I should buy?

-Should I get a pediatric vital signs & developmental milestones badge reference card?

-I already got a fun badge reel

I post this because I'm so excited to start my career with my dream job...in pediatrics! I want to be as prepared as possible and you know us perfectionists...want to have all my ducks in a row!

pedi pride!

Welcome to the club!

If your facility has resources, there is really no need to purchase additional resources...only if you want to. I have a Peds app and epocrates, as well as medscape on my phone for easy access and updates.

Make sure to find out if your states nurse practice act is available online; my state has theirs online for easy access.

As far as the Pediatric Standards from ANA, again only if you want to; there are plenty of pediatric resources to choose from, especially if you plan to get your certification in Peds.

As far as shoes, I prefer Nike Shox, or closed back Danskos brand, which includes Danskos, Sanitas, and Dansko XPs (has a very comfortable insole). My feet don't hurt after a long day

Thank you! Do you use the epocrates app for CE credits? If so how do you like it? There really is an app for everything!

I actually use Medsape for CEUs; as well as other places; my state also wants in person CEUs as well. Epocrates has really great case studies and news as well.

Welcome to pediatric nursing!!! :)

The vital signs badge card is a life saver. I used it all the time in the beginning. :)

Good luck!

So glad you posted this because I am wondering the same thing! I see this was posted a few months back so if you wouldn't mind giving me your advice now that you know what you are doing?
