I'm new to peds and was wondering what is the best etiquette when making introductions? Do I introduce myself first to the child then the parents? Or the parents first? Does it depend on age of the child? What approach would build the best rapport?

I agree, the vastus lateralis is the way to go. Current research shows, the ventrogluteal site is always preferred over the gluteas medius (buttock) because of the possibility of hitting the sciatic nerve. In general, I would never give a buttock IM.

Hello! I'm a new grad who just landed a RN Residency job in a pediatric unit. My advice to you is, if you have a passion, keep working towards it. Don't let words like "bad job market" alter your drive to be where you want to be. Jobs are out there. You may have to relocate, wait a few months for positions to open, or work on a unit then try to transfer. But if your heart lies in a specialty, you will shine in that area, which will make it hard for interviewers to ignore. As a student, I made requests to my clinical instructors to be on pediatric units. Being vocal about wanting to work with peds will lead to more clinical time, which will translate on your resume, which will stand out to employers. When students, friends, and people know you as the person who likes peds, you will become a peds person. Positive thinking, good luck!

I am a new grad and just got hired on a pediatric floor. I was wondering what do I need before starting work. So far I can think of... -scrubs, of course.. -nice shoes (any recommendations? I think the slip-ons are pretty cool...advice?) -stethoscope -pen light -I have a 2011 Mosby's Nursing Drug Reference...do you think I should purchase a current one? Do experienced nurses use personal printed drug references when resources are available in the hospital? -Should I purchase my state's Nurse Practice Act? -Should I purchase Pediatric Nursing Scope & Standards of Practice from ANA? -Am I missing any important books or references I should buy? -Should I get a pediatric vital signs & developmental milestones badge reference card? -I already got a fun badge reel I post this because I'm so excited to start my career with my dream job...in pediatrics! I want to be as prepared as possible and you know us perfectionists...want to have all my ducks in a row! pedi pride!
