What exactly is a 'weekend' anyway?

That's hard to say; it may just depend on how each individual facility defines a weekend. At my hospital, the weekend is typically Fri-Sat-Sun. Also, some facilities hire people to work Sat-Sun, yet pay them for 40 hours. Nice deal.

OK so its maybe agency-dependent? I thought maybe that it was standardized.

For that weekend-only shift, is it two-12's? that would be sweet.

Where I work Weekend is considered Sat & Sun or after midnight on friday if you work nights. the everyother weekend thing would probably start after orientation or the following weekend after you start.

Yes I have two weeks of fulltime days orientation, from 8 - 4:30 M-F. By the last two days I'll be on the unit, so I guess that will be 7-3:30. I will make my schedule at some point during that two weeks also.

As I was typing away in another post, I realized that my commitment of 'every other weekend' is not clear. Is a weekend Fri-Sat-Sun, or just Sat-Sun? When does it start?
I'll be working 3p - 11:30p, e/o weekend. Does anyone have any idea how this schedule works? I was told there is a degree of self-scheduling. Its 40h/week, biweekly pay.

Every hospital I've worked at, if you worked Days or PMs (lik eyou will be) then the "weekend" is Saturday and Sunday. If you work night shift, the "weekend" is Friday and Saturday. But every place is different.

Ask your HR dept. Each has a bit different definition, and only THEY Can set you straight on the particulars of your institution.

At my hospital, ONLY Saturday and Sunday is considered "the weekend." At my previous hospital, Friday night (7P) was considered a weekend shift. I was really disappointed to find out it was counted differently at my current hospital. It never occurred to me to clarify it. Check policy!

It really depends on your NM or who is doing the scheduling. At my first job, I worked 7P-7A and I was off every weekend. Well the weekend was S/S so I had to work every Friday! I never felt like I had a true weekend off because I worked for the first 8 hours of every Saturday and I had to sleep the next 6. It's not standardized but I would not be surprised if you were working on Friday before your weekend off.
