What else can I do with my BSN.

Published

I received my BSN in May of 2009 from Florida Gulf Coast University. All I have been able to find is LTC jobs and to be honest I can't stand LTC. Don't get me wrong, it isn't the residents I dislike. I simply find it horribly depressing. Honestly, I spend half the night grinding my teeth cringing before work (some of that may be my current employer). So here is my question: Given my BSN what else am I qualified to do? Most places won't hire me because they KNOW I am looking for something else. Both Wal-Mart and a fast food place (was desperate for money) turned me down because they didn't want to invest in somebody who was going to run at the first nursing job they found. Truthfully I can't blame them.

I am starting to really regret my decision. I went to nursing school because I enjoy nursing and to take care of my family. So far all it has accomplished is limiting my job prospects and put my family deeper in debt. I have applied all over the country for positions and I am lucky if I even get 1 phone call per 75-100 applications I put in.

Thanks in advance.

I was wondering the same thing. I also graduated in May 09. I am working in retail right now. I only work around 3 days a month and get paid $8.25 an hour. It almost isn't worth it to work after paying for transportation. Have you considered teaching or subbing? I looked into it but there aren't any open positions available for subs in my area. Good luck!

If you are desperate and want a Wal-Mart or fast food type job, suggest you leave off your college education from the job application. I found that a nursing education and nursing license kept me from getting employment when I gave up and looked for anything. Whenever I managed to get interviewed, they always made a big point to ask why wasn't I working, or looking for work, as a nurse. I never got any jobs, until I went back to nursing.

Teaching might be worth looking into. I need to find something...If I keep working were I am I am going to burnt out by the end of the year.

Have you applied for medsurg jobs at the hospital? What kind of work do you desire?

why dont you try to become a medical transcriptionist. just at home you can earn money.

Of course, you can apply for any kind of job that requires a BA/BS degree but doesn't particularly care what it's in. It would be v. easy to make the case that your nursing education gave you significant "people skills," critical thinking skills, organization and time management skills, etc., etc., which would translate into lots of different fields.

LOL, I have applied to anything that has the word nurse attached to it (well, maybe not wet-nurse).

I had a reason to ask you if you applied for medsurg. You say that "most places won't hire you because they know you are looking for something else." Why would anybody in a hospital setting think this? With a BSN you're qualified for anything as long as you have the experience. I must ask you this. Are you following up with the recruiter after filing your application/resume? As for me, I practically had to beat their door down to get an interview. I applied later than the other students so I wasn't getting that call back. I called every week and every week they said, 'we'll call you next week." I just kept calling every single week asking "anything yet?" Whether they got tired of me calling or saw me as someone persistent with potentials of being a very good employee, I was finally granted an interview and given a time to meet with the manager. I knew that if I could only get the interview, I would get the job. This I did. You have to be aggressive, you just can't wait for them to call you. It happens and sure they call some people, but sometimes you have to do more.

Put out some more applications in the hospital around your area. Give it a week or two and if you don't hear anything, call them!

I'm sure I verged on sounding desperate when I kept calling, but I had an arrest record that I knew was getting in the way of them calling me, so I had to sell myself.... and now they're glad they have me as their employee.
