What Do I Do????

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring nursing school and I am looking to see if there are any programs that meet my specific requirements.

My ultimate goal is to become a NA.

I have been working as a licensed radiographer (xray,ct,mri) for over eight years and I hold BS in biochemistry and a MS in Human Genetics.

I know I need to become a RN first....any accelerated programs?? and how do I find them???

I am in NYC....thanks in advance to everyone.

***Any special tuition reduction for males???? lol

Since you already have a BS, you can enter an accelerated RN program (13 mos.). Check the universities in your area. My friend in Colorado took this route and said it was rigorous. I went the ADN route and it was tough, too. You also mentioned becoming an NA...did you mean CRNA? If so, I believe you need CCU experience as an RN before you'll be accepted into a CRNA position. I work in the OR and there are many CRNA's as well as AA (Anesthesia Assistant's). I asked the AA about his position and basically it is a PA for anesthesia. There are only a few programs in the country, but they do NOT require CCU experience. In fact, you don't have to be a nurse. Search it up and check it out. Hope this helps!!!

Best of luck to you!!! J

Caveat: Currently, AA's can be licensed and therefore practice in only a limited number of states. CRNA's can be licensed and practice in all 50 states. Practicing as a CRNA offers more flexibility, more autonomy and more options when it comes to practicing as an anesthesia provider.

Hi all,

I am also trying to find a nursing school around my house and I am looking into for the ADN route. However I have a BA and MS but I think the ADN is the fastest I think. I was pre-med when I was undergrad so I had all college bio and chem but I took those classes around 1994. Do you think I need to retake them? And my second question is I am thinking to go to LATTC because it is cloest from my house. What do you think of that school. I moved to CA a few years ago and I really have no idea about community collegtes around in LA. Please help me out! Thank you in advance any of your thoughts and advices...

Hi Grant,

Here is the link to a list of nursing programs in NYS put out by the NYS board of Nursing, there is a wealth of info on this site:

http://www.op.nysed.gov/nurseprogs.htm

I am in sort of a similar situation. I have an undergrad and a graduate degree (although not in the sciences) however, I am going for my LPN (license practical nurse) license first and then go on for my BSN degree (acclerated program). This path suits my circumstances better.

I hope this helps.

Check with the specific school you want to attend about your sciences -- but most schools have rules about cut-off dates for hard science courses (because changes occur so rapidly in those fields). The time frame varies from school to school, but it's very common that colleges or universities won't accept/transfer science courses more than five years old.

Hi, Aneeta....first, I'd strongly suggest you start a new thread with your topic as the header, so you don't get lost in someone else's question. Also, you run the risk of seriously side-tracking the original thread's purpose.

Second, I'd post this question on the International Nursing board, as they'd be able to give better advice than the general population here.

Lastly, from my own bit of knowledge, much will depend on the State you intend to work in. Some States have temporary permits that can be applied for (and used) in between nursing school graduation and taking the NCLEX for the first time. You'd work as a graduate nurse, that is one who has graduated nursing school but does not yet have a license of her own. That permit expires with the taking of the exam: either you'd be issued a license, or you'd have failed the test and no license (or permit continuation) is available.

Other States do not have permits at all: you must pass the NCLEX exam first, get a license, and then begin work. No work as a nurse until you ARE a nurse.
