Welllllllllllllllllllll......... I started my new position in PP yesterday. It was actually kind of slow ( we had 2 pts and 1 went home), so I got to read alot of unit specific info. When I left yesterday afternoon we had 1 baby. When I got back this am we had 8!! Tomorrow we are looking at 4 inductions and 2 hysters. Keep in mind that we have 2 off service pts on the floor because the house is full as of today. Amazing how things can change in a day. Anyone else seeing a full house lately???????

Specializes in Neurology, Neurosurgerical & Trauma ICU.

I work in an approx. 900 bed Level 1 Trauma Center (that serves 5 states) and let me tell you, we're almost always near capacity....and now that trauma season is in, it's only getting worse!!! But that's ok, I LOVE it when it's crazy!!

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

been up and down all spring and into summer......we have been packed a lot lately...

I had a conversation with my cousin the other day, and between the two of us, we named ~20 people we KNEW (as in close friends and family) who were pregnant. Most of the due dates start in August and then go until at least December.

People were busy early this year. :)

Thats what I was thinking.... around Halloween to Christmas. We had 4 inductions Wed, and 2 surprises. Today we had 4 surprises. Amazing. I was impressed with one girl. Shes young and was in labor for almost 2 days, never felt any pain, finally took her for a section yesterday, came back with a Fentanyl epidural...... big abdominal incision and this am at 730 she was up in the hallway and is moving better than I do some days! The GYN told her this am on rounds that he wanted to at least "pretend that she had her abdomen cut wide open yesterday" Absolutely beautiful baby boy! Got to love the gift of new life.

Oh, I really wish you could be a doula somewhere. I know you said that they aren't used in your area very often. I'm kind of surprised as you said that you are in NY, right? That's a very progressive area and I'm sure people have at least heard of doulas in your area. Why not be a visionary and become one while you are waiting to attend school?? :) I tell ya, it's great experience, especially for nursing. Feel free to PM me if you want...

WEll, now the demand for doulas is not as high as the amount of them that we have here from what I understand from discussing it with my OB/GYN when I was there. I'm just not ready to take anything else on along with school either. I also wouldn't want to step on the doulas toes that are here. There are two of them (I think that's all) and wouldn't want to take away from their clientele when I am preparing to be a nurse anyways, KWIM? People around here just don't have the extra money to spend on doulas and since we have midwives working in the area, many people don't feel the need for the additional support (though I don't know why!).
