So I arrived at work today to find my adult psych unit was being closed to adults and reopening to adolescents. I transferred 15 patients with all the attendant paperwork in 2 and a half hours then the kids started rolling in. So I started admitting. We work 8's but I stayed over 4 hours and we admitted 15 kids. on the way out my boss actually stopped me and said Thank You for all your hard work today - I said it wasn't just me - I have the best team in the hospital and it showed today. Monday she is buying lunch for my team. That's why I stay where I am.

I wish more people would get that to be recognized and thanked for doing your job well and going above and beyond is often what we need the most.

Wow, sounds like you really rolled with something that sounds
pretty MAJOR to me. Or is this something that happens often?
I mean, for example, I worked on a post-surgical unit at the
first hospital I ever worked. Occasionally our census would go
so low that the entire unit would close.
This happened oh, about 2-3 times a year at most.
Is your situation similar, or is this truly some brand new situation
that you were never expecting in a thousand years?

Adolescent census fluctuates greatly - almost none around holidays and Summer season. then a huge influx once school starts. Tests, bullying, drug use boy/girlfriend , gender issues all seem to get worse when school is in session. And there are very few adolescent beds in our county and our facility can accommodate 30. Apparently school makes kids suicidal.
