I am interested in seeing what convictions deem a denial of licensure and which convictions were licensed. I have a criminal history of theft and have looked this site over but many people who did get a license say "I have have a criminal background..." but I am more interested in specifics. Please help!!

HI
First of all I am in Michigan. I had an extensive misdemeanor background. What shows up on my background check, which isn't everything is, 8 retail fraud convictions, latest of which was 7 years ago, 2 driving on suspended license, disorderly person(possession of marijuana), and a paraphernalia charge. These are all clustered together, due to a rough spell with alcoholism. I have been granted my Michigan license. Michigan is pretty cut and dry. They base everything on time frame. If misdemeanor theft convictions are 5 years or older then they don't automatically deny you, same with misdemeanor drug offenses. Abuse, or felonies are another story. If you have any questions I can answer for Michigan, just ask.

How about a misdemeanor battery conviction from Chicago? Do you think I have a chance of getting a job/licensed in Michigan? (with either a BSN or MSN)
Chrisbauerwrat, thanks so much for your input. May I ask, did MI give you a probationary license or any restrictions? I am concerned that if I am granted a license, they may put restrictions on it making it even harder for me to find a job. As it stands, my record is expunged so I don't have to disclose to employers BUT if on probation or sanctions, I would have to explain everything--opening up a can of worms I would not necessarily have to disclose. Perhaps I am looking into this too much, I am just trying to do all the research I can to determine if I really have a shot.
No probationary, regular license. For theft convictions in Michigan you don't have to disclose any theft conviction unless it is punishable up to 2 years incarceration. If your theft are minor misdemeanors and are over 5 years old then there won't be any questions for licensure.

Hi, I'm a California nurse with 2 felony counts of Trafficking heroin with other various offenses, DUI, Fugitive from justice, Receiving and Concealing stolen property over 100.00 to mention a few. These stemmed back to 1984. I graduated nursing school in December 2005 with no probation and/or any stipulations on my licensure. I did go to rehab for 3.5 years and successfully completed a program in San Francisco, with court ordered probation of 5 years. It can be done given the length of time and a focused goal. I believe what happened to me made me a successful and passionate nurse, increasing my ability to empathize with select patient cases. I currently work in a Psychiatric treatment facility where most clientele have had some form of drug abuse and deep rooted psychosocial problems. Don't cut yourself short because of a checkered past, most of the time the best nurses are the ones who have had a problematic upbringing that deliver the best treatment. Simply because we know how it really feels. Today, I received my Arkansas state licensure to practice with no stipulations attached. Remember, the ones that talk behind your back, are behind you for a reason.............Peace, and happy nursing to you.

In 2003, I was arrested twice in the state of California for Possession of a controlled substance. I entered a plea of guilty for both and my plea was deferred with a deferred entry of judgment (DEJ) and I was enrolled into the CA-PC 1000 program. I completed a drug diversion treatment program and the terms of my PC 1000 DEJ. My charges were dismissed and I have maintained a clean record since. I was granted licensure by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.

Well said, and very true about the ones that talk behind your back. I hope NY State licensing board is forgiving in my case. Made an awful mistake out of stress and being out of work-- criminal possession of stolen property I think grand larceny 5th degree...in 2011.
I hope I can sit for licensure and attend clinical. Sins from the past, oh boy!! I regret it so much and have learned a lesson just hope the board see's it that way. I can imagine all that hard work for nothing.

Hi! I'm so glad to hear your story. Do you have any experience or know of anything that's gotten licensed as a NP and gotten a DEA # to prescribe meds with a criminal background?
Update to my story!! I graduated nursing school May of 2016, took NCLEX in July, and passed with an unrestricted license in Michigan!! It can be done folks!!
