My sister is currently in the accelerated BSN program at OHSC *OU* and when it came time to do an ICU rotation she asked that she not be put in a NICU.

Did/do any of have NICU rotations?

I personally do not mind going into a NICU because I'll know what to expect.

Is NICU a requirement of some kind?

What other clinicals do you do in school?

Thanks

We had a day in NICU that was just observation.

Specializes in MICU for 4 years, now PICU for 3 years!.

I go to Wright State in Ohio, and here we have a peds and an ob clinical in the same quarter. In OB, everyone got at least 2 days in a NICU or SCN, but mostly what we did was observation. We were able to do some feedings, but that's about it. I think for some peds clinicals, they were able to do a day in the NICU, but it was just observation there...

My school didn't even have an ICU rotation - we only got to spend a day or two each in adult, peds, and neonatal ICU to observe the environment. I have heard of other schools having a whole ICU rotation but it was always adult ICU.

Some schools let you choose your final clinical in an area that you are interested in - like a role transition course - and that's the only time you'd spend more than a day or two in a NICU. This is almost always by choice - I've NEVER heard of anyone being assigned to the NICU if they didn't request it.

To answer your other question - each school is going to be a little bit different in what clinicals they have. Some include ICU rotations and others don't, like I said above. Some schools just kind of clump OB and Peds together and breeze through them, others spend lots of time in each area. If you read the course requirements (should be posted online) for each school you're interested in, you should be able to find out what clnicals you'll be going through.

In general...

Medical/surgical nursing of adult patients with both acute and chronic conditions, obstetrics, pediatrics, psych, and community health.

Specializes in NICU, GYN.

I'm a senior nursing student in West Virginia and NICU is not a requirement at my school. In critical care, you can request places to go such as PICU or NICU and they will try to get you in. Other clinicals we do are nursing homes to get general patient care in, Peds, Med-Surg, Psych, OB, Critical Care and Community. :)

First semester we did 5 weeks in medsurg

Second semester we did 5 weeks in OB and 5 weeks in a psyc facility

In OB we got to spend a day in the NICU if we wanted to. Of course I wanted to because I plan on being a NICU nurse.:nurse:

I'm pretty sure NICU is not in my future *God forbid I have another preemie anyway* but I would actually like to go back in and be an observer/helper. It would be familiar surroundings for me. I'm not sure why my sister refused NICU, I think her nephew being in there got to her more then she let on.

Thanks for the info
