What classes can I take to prepare?

Published

I'm currently a student at UNH and I'm looking to apply to either NHTI or Great Bay for the Fall 2011 nursing program. I did not meet the criteria for the UNH program this year and I missed the application dates for Great Bay and NHTI so I will be spending another year at UNH.

I have emailed Great Bay and NHTI about some sort of advising as to what classes I can take at UNH to prepare for their programs, but no one has gotten back to me. I have to sign up for classes for the fall and I'm not sure what I should be taking to prepare and give me a better chance at getting into these programs.

I've taken Anatomy 1, Anatomy 2, Nutrition, Psychology, Intro to OT, First-Year English and other various gen. eds. like Intro to Music and Finite Math.

To be blunt: What other classes should I take next year? Thank you so much!

I can tell you what is required for GBCC as I go there now, and tried to get into the nursing program but didn't make it this year. All classes need a C (73.33) to pass

A+P 1/2 -better to take before you apply

Intro to Psych

Human Growth and Development

Topics in Applied Math (your finite math could count)

English 1

College Success Class

Micro

A second English elective

Plus a fine art, language credit

Also, consider taking the NLN'S twice. You need to get in the 96th percentile to even be considered for the program. It is much easier to complete the program if you have all the core classes completed already. NHTI is about the same, but I think they have a different math requirement and they might require an ethics class.

Hopefully that helped.

The classes you have already taken seem to fit the bill. I would wprk hard on preparing for the pre entrance test if you havent already, GBCC still takes the NLN and it seems you have to score very high for greatbay. If you havent already taken it you should take it soon so you have time to do it again before feb 28th of next year, you can only take it every 6 months. NHTI will require the HESI A2 for 2001 and later. You can take that 6 weeks after you have taken it the first time then every 6 months after.

When you say you took anatomy was that just short hand for a&p? Some schools just offer plain anatomy classes and those arnt gonna cut it. You need A&P 1 and 2 with a lab.

Good luck it is a hard program to get into. Focus on those tests and you will have a really good chance! Good Luck!!!

You definetly need microbioligy.

Good luck!

Thank you all!

and yes, what I meant was A&P.

What I'm curious about is: are these classes ones that I 100% have to take even before applying? Or ones that would be a good thing to take to get ahead/look better? I know there is a slim chance of getting in anywhere if I haven't taken A&P 1 + 2. Any website I go on doesn't have any specific "pre-requisites" to apply to their program and I've been getting the feeling that these are suggested to take BEFORE I get into a program (hopefully). But then sometimes I come on this site and see people that say, "I've finished my pre-reqs, now I can apply!" Are these classes required to be finished before I even apply or just suggested?

There is such a thin line when it comes to nursing and gen ed classes vs prereqs. To my understanding the pre reqs are HS bio and chem (or the college equivalent) A&P 1, satisfactory pre entrance scores and 2 letters of ref. That being said...i personally never met someone who got in without a&p 2 also. I just got accepted to Manchester, i have every class complete aside from micro, which ill take this summer. There is a girl on here that scored higher then me on her nln but is waitlisted...the best we can figure is because she doesnt have most of the other classes completed yet, and mainly she hasnt finished a&p2 yet. With the classes completed that you have done I say you have a really great chance provided you do well on your pre entrance test. plus you have 2 semesters (summer and fall) to pick off some more classes. At an info session the lady said the class is 10 credits and you think in your head ok about 3 regular classes at 3 credits a piece...but she said its so much more then that...your not even allowed to hold a job for more then 20 hours a week. Like i said if you nail the pre entrance test, i think you would be in...but for your own sanity you should get everything else taken ahead of time. Good luck!!

Each school has its own prerequisite requirements that may differ from the school down the road. Some require you to have English, anatomy, and physiology to be completed before you apply, for example. Others may have a list of ten courses that must be all complete before you apply even though they only calculate the GPA from four of them as part of the competitive process. Did you get As in all of the courses you have already completed? Can you repeat courses to raise your GPA for the programs you intend to enter or does your school even let you repeat passed courses? If you got any Cs, you should consider repeating the course. If you got any Bs, you might want to consider whether it is worth the risk that you might not get an A the second time. Other than that, the thing to do would be to take other courses to fulfill graduation requirements.

You should know that last semester I took Microbiology at Great Bay with a girl that took it already at UNH and they wouldn't transfer the credit. So you might not want to waste your time there.

Thanks guys!

I think I'll be taking at least Micro and Human Growth and Development, as well as a few gen eds. I sent emails to both GBCC and NHTI hoping to get something specific back. I tried to get some info from my advisor at UNH but she has no idea what I should do. It also looks like I have to take two different tests; HESI for NHTI and NLN for Great Bay? Yikes!

I think I've finally decided what I'm taking next fall!

-Microbiology (which is looking kind of scary!)

-Repeating A&P 1 again (I got a C the first time, and after getting and email from GBCC, as of fall 2011 they are only accepting a C+ for their "special recommendations")

-Human Growth and Development

My advisor is not going to be happy with me. It was almost like she wanted me to just PICK a major at UNH because nursing wasn't going to happen. She told me the "worst thing to do" was to stay at UNH another year and just take classes. Oh well! UNH it is. :D
