While I agree that breastfeedong can be done discretely...no "flashing" if you will...I have a problem of taking an 11 day old infant out into the crowded, germ containing world...baby would be safer in it`s own little part of the world...not out in public....I know.I know...old fashioned old fart here....

Yes, that was my EXACT thought as an ob/newborn nurse. Public breastfeeding to me, is a nonissue. A baby's gotta eat. Breastfeeding is the best way to do it. Fact. Period. But that mom and baby should have been home, bonding and recovering, not in the office that day. THIS IS RSV SEASON AFTER ALL! JMO.

....actually, it's not down here - we're in the southern hemisphere - that's not until August.....

Back to topic, though.....the more I think about this, the more I agree with you guys. I was not even capable of getting dressed with an 11 day old baby, let alone organised enough to go to work....

However, the thing that struck me most initially is still irking me.....all the men in the lower house (not being sexist, just the only public comments I have heard have been from male MP's) who have commented have said the reason for their objection is that there is a law that says no-one other than an MP is allowed on the floor during question time.....sorry, but it just strikes me that they are using that as an excuse (politically correct, if you like) for the fact that they don't like her being there and breastfeeding.....can't be honest, cos they'd get shot down in flames....

Cactus wren, no, you are not old-fashioned. An 11 day old baby should be at home. The immune system is fragile, and the last thing the baby needs is to be dragged to work and among crowds of people. And mom should be home recovering, getting her energy back, and bonding with her baby--without the distraction of work.

And I agree with the poster who said they'd feel the same if the baby was being bottle-fed. In my mind, it's not the act of breastfeeding that's so inappropriate, it's the fact that the baby was there in the first place.
