I think this thread needs to be in the International Forum since the majority of Canadian nurses have not had to have their credentials assessed in this way. The process for moving from one province to another is much simpler and less time-consuming because educational preparation has mostly been standardised across Canada.
Hopefully some of the other IENs can help you.
CARNA may have completed their preliminary assessment of your credentials and are making their decision as to your eligibility for licensure. But right now there is a hiring freeze and even internal postings have to be justified by unit-level management and approved by the CEO of Alberta Health Services before the posting can even be open for applicants. The career postings website has only 7 nursing positions posted for the WHOLE PROVINCE; five of them are casual positions and two are part time. I've been thinking of changing jobs, but can't because there are no job openings. So don't worry too much about how long it's taking to get CARNA's approval. There won't be a job for you here anytime in the foreseeable future. Sad, but true.

But RN is one of the 38 skilled workers they have identified for "fast" immigrant visa processing. I thought RNs have brighter opportunities.... Please comment.....thanks
hello atzrn!
I passed my application sometime in april 2009, and my prelim assestment was cleared on May 27, 2009 on the same date I received an email from carna saying that my application is now forwarded for assestment, but since then i haven't received any, i read a thread here that it usually takes 3-4 months before we received a decision, but as i go on searching, many applicants say that it takes only 10 to 12 weeks when they recievd theirs, so I feel pretty positive about it right now.

There has been some major changes in Alberta with the health care and many Canadian or permanent residents have suffered and before jobs can be offered to a foreign nurse they have to prove that they can not employ locally first. Just because a job is a skilled one and on the list doesn't guarantee a job.

Hi All:
I am RN from United States and I recently applied for CARNA Assessment in Feb 2009. I checked my assessment status and they received all the 'required documents' in March 26, 2009 and forwarded my application for full assessment. Just today (May 05, 2009), when I checked my status I found that they updated cleared date on my Preliminary Assessment section. Does anyone has experience what this really means ? Did they approved my preliminary assessment ?
Thanks for your help and I look forward to hearing from you.
