What can I do with a CDL class A and BS in nursing?

Published

So I have my RN license. Is there any job in nursing that would require both CDL A drivers license and perhaps a bachelors in nursing degree?

I was thinking those huge mobile blood bank buses or something or a mobile clinic that has MD and RN to diagnose basic ailments.

I keep renewing my CDL physical card every 2 years otherwise they will automatically downgrade me. It is a new policy. I don't intend to ever drive again anyway, but before I let it go is there any job out there that requires both?

Any ideas?

Are you talking about nursing jobs that require you to have a drivers licence?

Home health agencies usually require their nurses and CNAs to have a valid drivers licence.

I've worked in residential treatment facilities (psych) for children and teens that had a bus to take the kids to activities and events in the community (like, on the weekends), and staff had to have a CDL in order to drive the bus. That's the only example I've seen in my career of a CDL being useful in a nursing position.

A CDL is a commercial driver's license, that allows you to drive buses/trucks.

Hmm - what an interesting skill set. I don't know of any nursing jobs that require CDL, but I know a couple of nurses who have CDL-A for their second job.... short haul truck driving part time - LOL. Apparently, it pays a lot more than other options & it's great because of the complete change of pace from the 'people intensive' regular job.

I think I am going to just keep renewing the physical card every 2 years just in memory and the love of having the license. Who knows it may come in handy some random day, and I will be excited to use it.

$75 to renew every 2 years is not all that bad.

It is really nice to know that I'm not the only one!!

unfortunately I haven't seen any jobs yet 🥲

cheers from New Mexico.

I had been a RN since 2001, mostly hemodialysis, while I hold my CDL A since 2012. Had not been using the  CDL A it until the late 2020, bc historically, nursing jobs paid more . Then I got tired from nursing in the late 2020, reach out to a friend in Chicago, he hooked me up with some east European company, I rented a semi- truck, opened  LLC, become an owner operator, and made crazy-fast money until 2022. It sound easy, but I want to mention that I had an accident crash during a 1.5 in a trucking business, and that the trucking journey was not easy at all, both mentally and physically. A good thing was that a truck was rented. This is the only option coming on my mind to use your CDL A, but the trucking industry is not in the good place now. I would add, not even dialysis world is in the good place. No mandated law for "staff to patient ratio" in Illinois and NY states. I currently work in dialysis acute, the workload is light, though the hospital management implemented a rule since October 2024 "no patient go home"(Flexing off). Best of luck and hoped I help.
