As a new nursing student starting in the Fall 08, I am curious about the journey and what is the best and most efficient way to get through nursing school with good grades. I have done well up to this point, but I am hearing how difficult nursing school is and I'm wondering if I am as prepared as I should be for the intensity of it. Any advice? Thanks!
Congratulations! This is a big step, but you can do it! I just graduated in Dec 2007 and the best advice I can give, besides all the great advice you have received thus far is....get a study buddy!!!! Someone who has the same type of study habits as you (you will find out who you click with in classes) and someone that you can debate with and still remain friends. I found a study buddy the 2nd week of classes...she and I now work in the same hospital and get together at least twice a month for coffee and conversation!
I 2nd the "don't get behind" advice...once you are behind, you work and work to get caught back up and never really get there.
Let us know how you do....good luck.
I just graduated this month so heres my 2 cents:
1. Study in groups
2. Be on time, professional, follow the rules, keep your head down.
3. Be organized
4. Get things done as soon as you can, but also take it a week at a time. My whole focus through out school was "Ok, whats going on this week" and for the most part I stayed focused on those things (Unless there was a bigger project or something coming up).
5. Keep perspective- realize you can't possibly get everything done in your life that you'd like. Decide what is most important and worry about those things- for me we ate plenty of quick cook and pre packaged dinners, the house was basically a mess the whole time etc.
6. Keep a life outside of school. You must have more in your life than just nursing school. I made sure to keep interested in other things. I read other stuff than just nursing stuff (not a lot, but some), I watched movies, I kept up with TV shows I liked, I traveled during breaks. I felt guilty about doing those other things, but I needed it to keep my sanity.
You can do it!! Just deal with one thing at a time and try not to get overwhelmed... it will seem like you have way more to do than you could ever get done, but as you keep plugging away at it, some how everything turns out fine.

Don't get discouraged and don't fall behind. If you need help - ask for it. And definitely take time for you - find productive ways to release the stress that nursing school will create.
Congratulations on getting into nursing school!!!
