I know the job market is bad, however, are new nurses looking at just hospitals and the more desired RN jobs? I know for a fact that there are 4 nursing homes within 20 minutes of my home that are hiring RN's with no experience. It's not as good of pay as hospitals, but it will get you the first year of experience you need. I mainly say this because the last new grad I spoke to said that she only wants to work part time, and that there are only full time openings out there. She also said a lot of hospitals have hiring freezes. And also, that she doesn't want to work nights. It just seemed like a lot of conditions to put on a first time job. Do you think that is what is happening with a lot of new grads, or are jobs hard to come by in this area no matter what?
I also about an hour east of San Francisco. I have not been putting any restrictions on my job hunt. I am willing to work days, pms, nights, part time, fulltime, per diem, you name it and I still cant find a job. I gotten many rejection letters and no call backs. I think the market for new grads in the bay area is the worst. If you dont mind, can you let know the nursing homes that you know of that are hiring new grads? you can message me. Thanks in advance!!!

Thats not completely true. There are hospitals that wont consider one year of experience in a nursing home. So depending on the hospital you want to end up working in, you may have to keep trying to get a new grad position wherever you can find one.

Nursing home experience is not usually considered as Acute hospital experience. I have heard of people not being considered for a position even with a few years in a nursing home, not the same.

I went to school in the bay area. But due to schools having a waiting list I continued my education in the Philippines. Just graduated and going back this June. I miss the bay area. :wink2:

This is my first job as a nurse -- I graduated in May 2008, and was hired in November 2008. Other posters are right -- the new grad job market is brutal here. Many of my fellow grads took as long to get hired as I did, though I think everyone in our class did have a job by January or so. Several people moved out of the area to find jobs, including one who moved to New York. Once you get that first job, there seems to be plenty of demand for experienced nurses, but getting that first job is tough.Good luck!
Good luck!
What kind of experiance are you talking about? I have 1 year in Med/Surg and Telemetry, ACLS and just got let go, because one doctor did not like the way I talked to him. Now I am finding out that everyone wants 3-5 years of experiance in areas such ICU, surgery or some type of home care management. I live in Michigan and I am starting to look to relocate. All the surveys report California to be the golden state for RN. Is this true?

Yeah, but the cost of living (and not just the salary) is high here too.
