Hello everyone, I’m new to this platform! I received the Early Acceptance Opportunity Day a couple of days ago and will be attending it...however I’m now between two schools-WesternU and APU ELMSN program. I don’t know which one will be best for me...does anyone have some advice?

Hi! I am actually going through the same decision process LOL. I got into APU ELM program, haven't heard from WesternU yet but I wanted to evaluate both options in case I got in. After a lot of research and much digging here is what I've found out!

APU is a 4 year commitment program. The first 2 years of the program  you work on getting your BSN. Then the final 2 years you work on getting your masters and FNP. So after 4 years you finish with a masters and FNP.

WesternU on the other hand gives you a masters in 2 years (versus 4)! Then after the first 2 years you are required to work as an RN for about a year (which is good because you gain experience and money). Then you have the option to either continue with WesternU at their FNP program (which you will be given first priority for) which will be only a year long. OR you can choose to purse a higher education such as a doctorates and become an DNP or you can decide to pursue your NP certification elsewhere, you aren't required to stay at Western.

Each have their pros and cons. I personally would love to go to western because I would be given more liberty to choose more advanced careers and specialties and it would take me less time to get a masters. They also expect you to work while attending the FNP program which is mainly online so you have the ability to make money while attending.

Hope I helped. You can DM me if you have more questions ?

From the website itself: "Our MSN-Entry program offers a path for graduates from non-nursing fields to obtain a MSN and RN license in 2 years."

Hi so I’m also choosing between APU and Western, and I just wanted to know what you mean by “you don’t need to reapply like western”? Aren’t they both NP programs or am I misguided? Thanks!

So for APU you get to choose a track (ex: FNP, PNP, Educator, etc) and you just take extra courses for that. For WesternU, you have to go through a separate application process and hope that you get accepted for the post masters FNP certification (however they do prioritize WesternU student applications first).

I hope that makes sense!

OMG thank you so much for this info!! I really appreciate it because I was stressing out and getting confused with Western’s time commitment and stuff. However, I did call APU’s financial aid and they told me that their tuition for the ELMSN program + FNP courses would be anywhere from $86k-100k which I think is half of what western u would cost. I guess depending on personal financial status, I would most likely go for APU. Either way it’s a very difficult decision! I will find out more info about what WesternU has to offer during the Early acceptance opportunity day though, so we will see ?

No problem! I know its a difficult choice, but both are great options. From what I know I think WesternU is around 90K in tuition and that I believe includes cost of living, so if your commuting that'll save you money! But I hope you find out more in the interview, let us know! Best of luck!

I registered for the 2/12 afternoon session the day after receiving my invitation. The AM and PM sessions on the 12th were the only dates still available as far as I could tell. I think someone said something about tomorrow, 1/29 though? Congrats to everybody who’s heard and good luck to everyone still waiting!

Me! I haven’t heard anything either. Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I don't think we will hear anything after they complete the early acceptance interview.

Because we're all prospective nursing students, this might be alarming, but please do not let it, in fact, alarm you:

I inquired about the 30 minute writing prompt on the website for those who are attending the early opportunity day. And now I no longer see the writing prompt listed as one of the requirements on the 'preparing for your interview' page. So, I think they took that out after I inquired. So, you're  welcome? Ha!
