West Coast University BSN to MSN

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

I've just recently visited the West Coast University campus in Anaheim to attend their general BSN program. I was mostly concerned if that BSN would be able to transfer to Cal State Fullerton so I could get my MSN in Anesthesia. The gentleman at the information session said with confidence that it would transfer to Cal State Fullerton "for sure, definitely." But after reading the forums here, I guess I received the wrong information. Could a representative from West Coast University or Cal State Fullerton clear this up for me please?

Also [my back-up plan] I was planning to get the BSN/RN at West Coast Univeristy and, if worse comes to worse, just transfer to an RN-to-BSN program at a Cal State and go to MSN Anesthesia from there. Could someone please clarify that this is possible? And please don't respond, "Why would you waste so much money there just to transfer to an RN-to-BSN program?!" It is because I would only have to spend 2 years there (with my transferred classes) and I qualify for financial aid. =) Thank you very much everyone for reading!

Which campus are you going to?

Socalnurse,

I too attended WCU, Ontario and I agree with what you had to say about the school. Im trying to make the best of it bc I only have 7mo left in my program...Did WCU refund your $$ when you dropped?

Hi,

WCU eventually refunded my funds since I did not start a new semester. It took about 2 months after I dropped for them to show on the ledger that the fund were returned.

I still have class mates that go there and their tuition keeps on going up.:twocents: They nickle and dime you for everything despite the sky rocket high tuition. If you really have to this route, Do so. But just realize there are alot of kinks in their new program. I found out that they changed the schedule recently to be 9 week courses 1 week break in between X 5 terms. In the end you will be able to sit for the NCLEX and that is the goal at the end of the tunnel.:nurse:

Nursing HESI exams are where they will get some failure, so you have to repeat the term over. This means more money from you. So if you think that the tuition is only 120-130K, you may be out an additional 9k for the semester/term you repeat. If you mess up by a single term, you will still be charged for the semester. If you have a single class into the new semester, you will be charged by the semester.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Socal

wow it's so great to hear that wcu finally got their accreditation! i am also in the same boat, planning on taking msn anesthesia. i'm starting west coast in feb 2010, nervous to start!

did you passed the entrance hesi exam ? how can i get some information about this test? i have to take this soon. thank you!

Hey everyone i am taking the HESI entrance exam at WCU on friday and wanted to know if the study guide they provide is helpful

Hi all.

just wanted to say that i've read reviews about this school, and some are true, some are not.

Is tuition high, yes. However, this is the price of enrolling right away into a associate or bachelor degree with no waiting line. It's your money and your time, you choose how you invest it, but if the idea of being on a waiting list doesn't suit you, then that is where WCU and other for-profit schools come in.

Accreditation, WCU is accredited by CCNE, and recently received the visit of WASC and received the recommendation for accreditation. This means that in a short time, WCU will be WASC accredited.

Also, I heard that Masters programs will be starting at the L.A. campus....hopefully soon after the same will happen with the other campuses.

So I guess it comes down to this, you either want to save on cost, but will wait a loooooong time to complete your degree, or you will invest in high cost education knowing that you won't have to wait for a spot.

good luck

I spoke with the dean at the OC campus about the WASC accreditation and she said we are in the initial phases and that it takes a few years.

I read up on all the WCU posts before deciding to finally attend and I have to say, some things people say here are not all true. The teachers are wonderful and tuition is expensive.

The way I see it, with 20-30 spots at most CCs and hundreds of applicants: that's not worth waiting for, especially since I have no other degree to fall back on to for the meantime and work. Some posts on here are so critical but I look forward to graduating years before all my friends at a CSU & UC and I can actually start working and making money.

Do you think doctors can pay off their loans right away? it's the price you pay for a gratifying career!

jokes and jokes

Yes please tell us why you withdrew. I am considering attending West Coast next August but am unsure how good the program is.

Did you enroll in direct BSN program??

I'll go to WCU tomorrow to find out more about the program.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

For those of you considering, please keep in mind the cost of tuition in regards to the lack of current jobs for new nurses. I have only 40k in student loans, but I average paying 600/month in loans. Everyone acts as though nurses bring home all this money, but I average bringing home about 4200/month and that's on night shift. That may seem like a lot, but cost of living is so expensive. If you get a "surprise" with a baby or if factors change in your life you aren't expecting, the loans become even harder to pay off.

If you are single, no plans for marriage/kids soon, and able to live cheaply, and avoid the new cars and fancy things. You may be able to afford the student loans.

Also don't count on overtime being available. I've noticed hospitals constantly going back and forth with overtime. If you ever have to rely on overtime for your monthly living expenses you are in a bad place. I've seen nurses lose their homes because they simply lived beyond their means, and expected the overtime to always be there.

That being said, good luck to you all

This school sucks they are unorganized and giant pricks. I have been a student there since 2009. Trust me when I say it is the Devry of Nursing schools. The instructors are good but administration is only worried about money and student services are lacking. The school tells us not to bad mouth the school because it will cheepen the degree but I don't care as long as I have my license I will have a job.I will just won't hang that diploma on my wall. They are not wasc accredited yet.and the program cost is $136000.00. Check out Western Govenors University .It's way cheaper and Wasc accredited.

I just met with a West Coast representative and brougt up this issue. His response was that they do not have the accredidation as of yet and it is solely up to the institution you wish to apply to regarding acceptance of west coast's degree. My advice would be to contact the schools you plan on applying to for your masters and ask if they accept West Coast Universities degree. Goodluck :)
