i have questions about the bs nursing program at west coast university - orange county

  1. i have only high school diploma, do i need to do prerequisite courses at west coast university before i start the bs nursing program?
  2. west coast university got [color=#b22222](ccne) accreditation, does my bs degree (from west coast university) will be accepted in other universities (ucla, uci and csu) in case if i want to apply for ms program?
  3. does the $126.000 enough to cover the 39 months of study at west coast university? or i need more?
  4. is it easy to get a job after graduate from a private school? do you think employees prefer graduates of state universities than private universities?

I don't know how rigorous the classes are, true, but if the prerequisites are a walk in the park like mentioned above, I would assume the actual classes are not that hard either. Nurses should have a weeding out process where not anyone with money can become one, rather high grades and test scores are taken into account. Sounds a bit harsh but others lives are at stake. If someone just decided to walk in one day, enroll and stick it out at a half decent school does that make that person qualified to be in a health care setting?The cost is one thing but automatic admission based on a far below basic level acceptance test is another. There is a blatant disregard for quality nurses at wcu, where money plays the majority role on campus.

I think you should ask the CA BON why they feel this school is acceptable. You obviously feel that these nurses are unsafe for practice, so why not investigate?

I do not care to waste my time on what is obvious. I'm sure they met the bare minimum to qualify for the BON and WASC but what bothers me is how they take students in. Their methods on teaching might be ok too, but if the students they take on are not legitimately qualified then they should not be qualified. Wcu seems to me like a bsn diploma factory where "classes start every three weeks!" There might a shortage on nurses but we can't fill that void with under qualified ones.

I am in my third term at WCU and I started before the WASC. For me, getting in was a breeze. Now they are makingit harder to get in since a lot more people are coming in now. but let me tell you, you HAVE to study. If you do not, you will fail. And once you fail 2 courses, you are dropped from the program. It is so fast paced and if you get behind, that is basically a whole letter grade. I know several people who did not take it seriously or their minds were not in the right spot and now they are only allowed to take whatever course they failed this term. Now, I cannot personally speak about core, but I have a few friends graduating this year, and it has not been easy at all. You have to pass the Hesi or ATI exit exam from each core course (you may only take the exit test after you have a 76% or better from all course exams combined, not including other assignments.) it is not easy here at all. I do agree with you guys about them letting anyone in, that is slowly changing. But trust me, they don't make it far once in. I hate how they sell themselves, and I hate hate the price of the school, but you do not buy your BSN here. You have to work like anywhere else.

sorry for not responding to this first! 1) no prerequisite needed. 2) with the wasc, yes your degree is transferrable. 3) i believe it is 132,000 starting from ground up. if you can take all your prerequisites somewhere else, you can save a significant amount of money. i transferred in 4 classes and my cost is 110,000. bad, but it is necessary for me right now. and they can raise tuition just like any other school, so it may go up. never know. 4) i am sure some employers may look at it, but some also just want rn license. it just depends how things are. good luck! :) any questions, let me know

I guess we will never know if the classes are easier than the state schools until someone who has been to both posts something. They do sell themselves and I don't understand something. Is the money theirs once you apply despite getting dropped? Or will do they reimburse you if dropped? Do they make prerequisites easier to tease students to continue? I can not see them dropping and reimbursing because that would go against their for-profit mindset. I know one thing, who ever started wcu is a millionaire and brilliant.

Well if it helps, I have friends from cal states and UCs and they have said the classes are comparable. But I cannot speak for myself, I went to a JC. And no, If you fail, the money is theirs and/or the loan company. So it is such a motivation to do well. I see the ones who literally don't care and their parents are paying. Mine certainly aren't, and even if they were, I would still work my booty off cause this is my career and I need to know it. Anyways, I agree with you too. The person is a genius.

Well the thing that bothers me is how they accept and as soon as they start accepting maybe like mount saint Mary's I and along with many others will be pleased. And maybe wcu students will not be denied jobs with extreme prejudice.

I go to a community college and they definitely will keep the money if you fail or drop after a month of school. Of course, that would mean you are out maybe $100, as opposed to several thousand.

Well I know hospitals do hire WCU grads, so I am not concerned with any prejudice. And I will be happy once they make it harder to get in as well.

Well if a wcu were up against a csu grad I doubt te wcu would get the benefit of the doubt. Anyone beg to differ?
