:yeah:

Today was exam 3 of 5, and I have officially survived our Maternity lectures and now move on {happily} to dysfunctions of the child, beginning with child w/cardiovascular alteration on Monday. Looking at the syllabus I am not too sure what I am going to do, not having to read 250-300 pages/lecture.

I have to say that if I knew everything that I know now I am very doubtful that I would have had children ;) God Bless our L&D Nurses!! I just couldn't do it.

ok, the title is HILARIOUS! I felt just like you did during this section. Not my thing at all!

We all have areas of care and patient populations that we dislike. But I think it is a shame that you have expressed the sum total of your maternity rotation as pertaining to the lady parts. It seems you may have missed out on the other million and one aspects of reproductive care.

Well, I'm just starting my mother-baby clinical (first year student nurse here), and as a male with absolutely no prior experience with anything having to do with childbirth or maternal women I can honestly say I'll be glad when it's all over and we're on to our second phase of geriatric rotation in the long term care facility. Never thought I'd be actually glad to head back into the nursing home setting.

In addition to being the proud owner of one X and one Y chromosome, I am also gay so I have no direct experience with female apparatus. I am so wishing my first exposure to such territory didn't have to involve such things as lochia and episiotomies. :barf01:

Oh well, I guess what doesn't kill us makes us stronger! :pumpiron:

And thankfully we all have areas of care that we like.

Actually Jolie, my expression was a 'joke' and nope, I didn't miss any aspects of reproductive care considering the past 8 weeks I have read well over 1500 pages regarding conception to postpartum. Have you begun/completed your maternity rotation? Or maybe you didn't notice that my post concentrated on:

I got that it was a joke. I just didn't see the humor in characterizing maternity patients as "lady partss", just as I wouldn't appreciate the characterization of psych patients as "nut-jobs", pediatric patients as "brats", geriatric patients as "cute little old ladies", etc. I think that when we belittle our patients (especially on a public forum) we show them disrespect and cheapen our profession.

To answer your question, I passed maternity with flying colors and have practiced maternal child nursing for more years than I care to admit, in roles ranging from staff to management to transport to education. I have met patients and families I loved and patients and families I disliked, but I can't ever recall referring to any of them by their body parts.

I hope that as you move on thru your other rotations you will come to see your patients as something more than the cardiac kid in 201 or the broken hip in room 700.

Best to you.

i got the joke & was able to find it funny too! :nuke: congrats to you on moving on. we all have the things we prefer to concentrate on. keep your sense of humor in school. it's one of the best things to have.

Jenny67 I thought it was hilarious.

And I did not think that you were referring to your patients as lady partss. I took it as you were out of the lady partsl region in lecture and not meaning a patient. At least that is what I thought. I think that Jolie is taking this way to personally.

as did I..LOLOLOL:nono:

WEll, my apologies for your feelings that I was classifying maternity as a lady parts, because that was NOT my attention, as I would never refer to any other studies as you described.

I passed my exam, came home and realized we were done with our maternal section, opened my syllabus and almost fell off my couch when I saw that our cardiac unit for Monday has less than 55 pages to read vs the 250-300 pages for each unit that I have read for each of our 12 Maternity units and thought I'd make a funny post to see if there were any other students feeling the same way.
