Welcome to the Forum - General Aussie Chat

World Australia

Published

Having been guilty myself of hijacking threads saying hello and just chatting to my fellow Aussies I thought it might be worthwhile for us to have a thread that is just dedicated to general Aussie chat. We can then discuss issues like the Morris - oops Davis inquiry in Queensland and what it will mean for Q health and for the rest of Australia.

We can talk cricket, sport and anything else that is just us.

Say hello to new members dropping by.

Generally find out what is happening in the rest of the country.

I will make this thread a "sticky" so that it will always be at the top of the forum.

You must be working at a public hospital in Victoria, then. Other states do not have a ratio law. And Vic's ratios do not apply to private hospitals. Sometimes I will not even be allocated four -- I've had shifts with only three to look after, and not all that acute. On the other hand, night duty has a max ratio of 8:1.

Working with four patients is not THAT hard. They tend to be less ill than in the U.S., from what I've heard. More than half the ones I get on a typical shift are self-caring. Fewer on IV drips than in the U.S. Plus there's Aussie teamwork to help you if things get sticky.

Dear OnTheShoales,

Are you currently working in Australia? I work in Conn., US and will be relocating to WA to work for public hospital. I really want better understand differences between nursing in US and Australia. Will be thankful for any info.

Hi Cultuslakenurse,

I will apply next week for the license in WA. My transcripts and US license already sent by scool and Nursing board. I'm just waiting for notarized copies of my personal documents. I think WA processes licenses quicker that in Oueensland. However, I have a feeling that my AD will be the problem also. Did you graduated from nursing school in US or Canada? And did you need to take additional courses/exams in the order to be licensed in Queensland? I'm so happy that you got the license

HI Cicada, thanks for the congrats. YOU MUST apply for your licence and SOON. It took 10 months for me, going back and forth and alot was to do with my AD programme, the hours of theory and the hours of clinical. Good luck.J.

Hi Gwenith, Great idea for this threat. I work in a large rural hospital. Our current problem is the drought and being on Level 5 water restrictions. Not only does this affect our gardens, dirty cars and inability to connect a hose to a tap (if a hose is connected to a tap the council can come and snip your hose in half!) but also affects our hospital practices. Our patients recieve plastic plates, knives and forks for all their meals to cut down on water use by the kitchen dishwashers and we have converted to many disposable single use sterile supplies to save on water use in the CSSD. We have problems attracting permanent nursing staff and are often phoned on our days off to work extra hours (they phone me every week!). Despite all this I love my location and workplace, am proud of the work I do, and have wonderful caring colleagues. I am also fortunate to have been given the opportunity to do my post graduate anaesthetic certificate with the fees paid by the hospital. Due to our nursing shotage we are very multicultural with nurses from across the globe (currently from canada, zimbabwe, ireland), this all adds to the realisation that despite some cultural differences.... nurses have a common goal...caring for our patients.

With those water restrictions, it sounds like you must be in Queensland!

Let's hope rain comes soon!

It's so dry up here that the trees are whistling the dogs!!

Although this drought has had one GOOD outcome - we are finally starting to put in place the water saving measures we SHOULD have put in place years ago.

here in perth, i have to confess its rather ridiculous... we have these water restrictions, and then on the day it does rain, you could drive down the road and count the parks with sprinklers on.... not smart like all bureaucratic agencies, one rule for them, one rule for the people who actually make a difference to the world... but it hasn't effected the hospitals yet.

Hi all Aussies,

I am new to this site & a mature age student, living my dream of finally doing nursing!

Interested in anyone alse having a general chat about nursing, the highs & lows of studying/exams etc, or anything else??

Just watched the Steve Irwin memorial service yesterday.... my eyes still sting from crying. didn't know him at all but like the general feeling is by many, you feel like you have lost someone you know.

Bindi is awesome! What a kid!

Anyway

Bye all

Hi!

Good on you for starting nursing - where are you doing your degree? Would love to chat about nursing etc.

And yes, the memorial service was v. sad, but lovely all the same. Was a bad week losing both croc hunter and brockie!

Cheers

Hiya

Have finished my degree actually and having been nursing for a while but just finished post grad uni last year. Am a bit over studying! Can sympathise with how much study you must be doing. You certainly won't find it hard to get a job when you finish your degree, you'll be able to pick and choose - what are you thinking of specialising in?

Toowoomba's a lovely town! Am just down the road in Brissie.

:specs:

Hi Emmalou,

Not sure if I am replying the right way re: post reply??

Anyway let me know if there is a different way?

So. Do you love your chosen career? Have all the years of study been worth it?? I just work part time in an Aged care facility but cant' wait till I get out there into the hospital system.

Cheers
