Weird little things you do as a nurse

Hello AN people,

I am in private duty home health and I assist with my patients with all sorts of odd things as part of being their go-to gal in their home.

This weekend I had a blast assisting a patient make a Facebook page.

It really did warm my heart because this patient is extraordinarily isolated due to medical and psychological issues. He is learning to use a communicator to reconnect to the world around him, and one of his first forays into new territory is to make a Facebook page. Suddenly all the junk info I knew about Facebook became useful, and this patient made a stride in coming out of his shell.

What sort of weird little things you have done as a nurse? Stuff that made you go, "I'm doing this on the clock? Really?" :lol2:

Specializes in Certified Med/Surg tele, and other stuff.

Back in the stone age when I was an LPN at a SNF, I would finish my last med pass and go sit with this one LOL that had no family nearby. She had this really comfy chair in her room and I would plop myself down and we would chat for a good while. When she was tired, I would tuck her in, give her a hug and turn off her lights.

Another LOL, loved my pg belly when I was pg with my first. Anytime I would get close to her, she would pat my belly.:lol2: After my son was born, I made a surprise visit during my leave and let her hold my son with my help. OMG she was over the moon. She talked about it for weeks on end. When I was back to work, her daughter came in to thank me for making her mother's day. I told the daughter that it made mine as well. This pt suffered horribly from diabetic neuropathy and she forgot about her pain long enough to hold my son.

I tripped on a patients walker and went flying across the room. Finally got him to crack a smile. :|

I also cuddled a little baby for a few hrs at the nurses station so the parents could get some much needed sleep. Although that was for purely selfish reasons.

Specializes in NICU.

Seriously, don't we have the best jobs ever!! :redbeathe I feel truly blessed...

I'm a home health nurse and I have bought patients pulls ups and medicine.

Years ago it was common for oncology patients to have frequent extended admissions. When one patient's favorite nurse got married, we wheeled her down to the main entrance and had the bride and groom stop by on their way to the reception so she could see her in her wedding dress.
